audio fading in and out

exactly as the description says. My music keeps getting softer and louder at odd intervals. I was thinking that my music was sounding bad...I mean it was to the point where the music sounded MUCH better on my ipod than on my surround sound system...and I realized that the music was fading in and out.

what could be causing this?

make sure your cables aren't damaged, i've had something simliar happen with damaged cables…
