how do i shop for sound cards?

i have no idea which one to get!!

i've had a audigy 2 for a while now. i think its the regular one...the speakers i have are creative lab inspire 2500. i listen to music alot on my computer and and starting to notice that the sound quality isnt all that great anymore...

when i look at sound cards online, they are all 24 bit 96 sample. how do you know which ones better or what card you want? i guess higher prices are better...but i dont wanna spend too much. could my speakers be the reason why my sound isnt that great also? the speakers are getting kinda old...one of them is louder than the other, but its not a big deal to me.

i just built a computer for my mom and shes missing speakers and a sound card, so im thinking this would be a good time for me to get a new card and maybe new speakers also and give her my old ones...shes mainly going to use it for work anyways...
