How do I get headset microphone to work?

First of all, I am using a Dell Power Edge Server 400SC and a SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer Sound card.

I tried the Plantronics USB headset, and could not get the mic to work. Then I got the SEnnheiser 155 with USB adapter and tried both USB and two 3.5 minipins. I can get the hardware test to detect the microphone (as I did with the Plantronics USB) but I cannot get my voice into the game.

System Specs

The first thing to check is to see if the mic is selected as the input device for recording.

Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Volume Control.

When the volume control displays, look for 'Microphone', if you don't see it, click on Options, and select Properties. Look for Microphone, and put a check in the box. After you click OK, look at the Microphone setting, and make sure that there is a check in MUTE for the microphone. I know this sounds odd, but what you are seeing at this time is the PLAYBACK portion of Volume control, and you need to mute the Mic in here so that you don't hear yourself speak when you are using the mic.

Now click on Options/Properties again. This time click the dot in front of RECORDING, then make sure that there is a check in the box for microphone. Afrer you click OK, make sure that there is a check in the 'Select' box under Microphone. Now you should be good to go for using the mic.
