Halfway there!! Direct Monitoring enabled in Audigy 1!!!!

Hey dudes,

Well, we're halfway there!

Today I got the direct monotoring option to become active in cubase SX (previously in was greyed out)!!

Before I post the steps I did, let me state that direct monitoring is not working yet, I assume because there must be some setting in the mixer or the EAX control panel that needs to be adjusted. I havent installed these apps yet, and I would sincerely appreciate the help of anyone using a Audigy 2 on what to install and what I need to do.

That said, this is what I did. I uninstalled my previous Creative drivers. Then, I installed directly from the .323 update. I didnt use the CTAPXX.EXE because I kept getting an error message. Instead, I initially used the Windows XP installer to install the drivers from the xp_2000 folder in the update. This istalled the audigy as creative WDM drivers, and no ASIO support was present. I then used the CTAPXX.EXE from the update and it installed this time. When I rebooted, I opened Cubase SX and the direct monitoring option was no longer greyed. However, it is still showing the ASIO driver as Creative ASIO instead of SB Audigy ASIO, as Audigy 2 users have.

Anyway, this is what I've done so far. Now I could really use an Audigy 2 user to help me get the rest of the way, if its possible after all.

Cheers,
ripper

Okay, I'm getting pretty close to committing murder here.

This is how things stand: a) Direct monitoring does, in fact, work. There are only two issues with it. The first is that you direct monitor only the dry input (although plug ins do get recorded) and I think that's probably the way its supposed to work, although I had hoped that you could monitor the plug ins, too, but that wouldnt be direct anymore, would it? The second issue is that if you mute a audio track you also lose the direct monitoring.

What really getting to me is that Direct monitoring only works for 1 reboot! After I install, I reboot and everyting is fine. When I reboot again the option is greyed out. I can think of no good reason for this to happen. Relevant to this is the fact that cubase SX detects a device called "noname 2" when DM is working, and does not detect it when it is not.

Can anybody please help here? The Audigy 1 does have direct monitoring capabilities, the fact that it worked at least once proves that.

One last thing, I phucked up on the install instructions, sorry. The first step (XP installer) is correct, but the second step is that you copy all the files in the drivers folder (and copy the files from eash subfolder, NOT the subfolders themselves) into the 122MG CD rip, into the drivers folder and the corresponding subfolders. I have untinstalled - reinstalled at least 5 times, and each time direct monitoring works after the first reboot, so this is no fluke.

Cheers,
ripper

hmmm, interesting. digital output on a sb live also works only after the first reboot when using those drivers. maybe my fix will work for this issue also... try it:
http://www.republika.pl/evil_one2/livefix.zip

extract the contents, right click the inf, select install and reboot.
if it will work, it may break again after messing around in ct's apps, such as the mixer, speaker settings, eax control panel, etc, but a reboot will fix it again.

from what you're saying, there still might be some 283 leftovers in the common folder. make sure files CTDAUGHT.DAT, ctdlang.dat, CTSTATIC.DAT and DEFAULT.ECW are identical as those in win2k_xp folder, if not, replace them.

Hi evil one, thanks for the advice. Unfortunately the fix didn't to the trick. This is driving me nuts, there must be some way to get it to work. So far, the only workaround is to run CTAPXX again (no need to uninstall), after that it works again but inly for one reboot.

G' morning all!

Well, no new breakthoughs, but I've confirmed that the direct monitoring option will initially work ONLY if you first install the WDM drivers through Windows installer and then use CTAPXX. I tried every other concievably combination and nothing worked. I even tried using evil_one's ini instead of the CTAPXX and that didnt work either. I ended up not being able to get direct monitoring to work again, probably because through all the installs/uninstalls (over 40) something in the registry got fucked up. I really dont know where to go from here, I'm in over my head. I noticed that there are some reg entries which change from after the install (before reboot - DM works) to after reboot (DM still works) then on subsequent reboots it doesnt work anymore.

I hope that somebody else can pick up here, I'll probably have to do a reinstall of XP on my DAW partition to check things again.

Cheers,
ripper

Hmmm.....

Sorry to say I don't have any newer Steinberg software or I would try to help you out.

Could it be something w/ EAX & Directsound?

I really wouldnt know about EAX or Directsound, but I only installed the drivers, anyway. If somebody uses Cubase SX or the demo, I would really appreciate some help

The more I think about it (today I'm at work, no chance to test stuff) the more I'm convinced it must have to do with some value which is entered into the registry via my setup routine, as opposed to the normal setup. Unfortunately, I dont know how I can monitor this, how I can know what is being entered into the reg using the two installs, or, for that matter, what is changed in the reg after the first boot that doesnt make it work when its booted again.

If anyone knows of a way to do this, it's much appreciated.

I hate knowing that there MUST be a way to do something, yet not being able to find it.

Cheers, all
