Nice headphones

Hey I need headphones to go with my Z-560 when my roomates are sleeping, lol. I wanna spend 30-60 bucks around, and I want a nice brand, great quality, 40mm drivers, etc, just don't know, I haven't seen any nice ones in that midrange. If I could get in store that would be great 2, but a link would do.

thx

www.goodcans.com Has some information on headphones - I haven't actually used any of the ones they review or talk about, but you might find their suggestions enlightening...

I have heard the Koss headphones mentioned on the website, now that I think a bit more about it - my friend has some headphones a lot like those in the picture, and I've listened to those, just I've never made the connection til now - really good bass if you need the heavy bass for the kind of music you like - I've heard that the Grado SR60's are a bit light on the deep bass...

Yes they are well worth it.

However, take a look at this.

I have Grado SR60 and I recommend them without reservation. In fact, I'm listening to them right now . go here for recommendations by price: http://www.goodcans.com/HeadphoneRev...mendations.htm

The place I posted also sells Grado's as well. Take a look also at what they say about the 497's vs the Grado's.

I dislike buying not online with headphones, I've always had bad luck (broken pairs, etc) so I'd pay the 10 dollars xtra for peace of mind, lol.

I figure it would be the other way around. You'd dislike buying them on-line because you couldn't hear them.

don't be greedy!
spend a few more bucks, but get a nice one!

I recommend Sennheiser HD 570
There is no comparison to this artwork. Great sound: deep basses, airiness at hi.freq.

Also, take a look at HD 590 - same construction, but better technical characteristics

HD 570

Little example why you should not pay attention to technical characteristics - Philips HP 840 vs Sennheiser HD 570:
Philips says: Freq. resp. 8 - 35000 Hz
Sennheiser HD 570: freq. resp. 18 - 22000 Hz
!!!

But even not special trained ear easily feel the great difference: HD 570 have deep powerful bass and light airy high frequencies and Philips sounds like cheap chineese crud with loss of real bass and cutoff high freqs at ~16kHz!

So, you have to hear the thing you wanna buy and if there is no possibility to compare 10 - 15 pairs using your ears, cd with your favourite music and hi-fi (or, if possible, hi-end) hardware - proceed to next store!

I have HD 570 pair at my workplace and i'm about to buy in near future Sennheiser HD 590 for home use.

I have a pair of the 570's as well...great headphones! However, I would not recommend them for portable use. Impedance is quite high on them.

Thought I might chime in with a little plug for Sony. I have the Sony MDR-V600's. I've had these for like 10 years (maybe longer) and I can't kill them. The huge thing with me is that I have those big dumbo ear type things going on and I'm also an avid LAN partier. This translates into many consecutive hours of headphoning, so comfort is of the utmost for me and the dumbos. The Sony's do it. Full dumbo ear coverage with some of the best sound of any headphones I've ever heard. I'll sit through full DVD movies with these babies. Almost better than a theater I swear.

Find a store that will let you take a listen with them, then go here: http://www.soundcity.com/product.php?product_id=12057 and purchase. I paid $100 for mine way back when (and at most places they still are $100) so the $60 is a steal in my book. Amazing frequency response with a 40mm driver to boot. They also fold up and fit in a little carrying case for travel. Couldn't hurt to try 'em out.

Grado

Grado rips. I have some myself, and they are truly great. If you take off the covers and see the size and quality of the speakerelement inside you will see that it is no cheap commercial product.
In older hifi reviews the cheaper Grados around 100 us dollars whipped headphones up to 300 us.
