Hi Scorpius, what Creative card are you using? What drivers have you installed?
It's been a few month since I had my Audigy 2 ZS. If I remember correctly the Audigy drivers don't have a test for CMMS1 for headphones, just for speakers. It's a "Channel Check" system to see if you have your 5.1 speaker system hooked up and placed correctly. The only way to use that channel check is to have 5.1 headphones hooked up to the speaker output jacks on your sound card instead of speakers. If your trying to use this test on two channel headphones with an Audigy, I don't think it will work.

The new AKG K240 Studio headphones.

Damn. Good. Cans.

Its older brother, the legendary 600-ohm AKG K240 Monitor, has been a broadcast and recording industry standard for over 30 years! The new lower impedance of the 55-ohm AKG K240 Studio allows them to work with lower level output sources too (loud and clear; even from the tiny op-amp of my sound blaster audigy). I've owned mine for a while now. These headphones are a pleasure to listen with. Smooth, solid bass and well-balanced, articulate mids and highs. Also, the circumaural pads are so comfortable, I quickly forget I'm wearing headphones at all!

Probably the last headphones I'll ever own.

http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=K240S

Other favorites I've used (but do not own):
Sony MDR-7506
Beyer DT770PRO

Sennheiser HD 580. The only pair I found that could match my old HD 565 ovation.

For the hell of it picked up a pair of Seinheiser HD280s. Very clean sound, and amazing sound stage. Clearity is unbelieveable for a pair cans this cheap, and I thought my Grados were great for under 80 bucks. Of course they are huge, and that's coming from a guy with a big head! I have a pair of HD580s and I really think I like these better. However, not going to replace my Shure's for portable though.

Recently upgraded to a pair of Sennheiser HD580's with a Headroom Total airhead amp. Much to big for portable use, so I bought some Senn cx300's for that. Not as good as the Shure's but great for outdoors. For those of you who want *true* 5.1 gaming phones, I recently came across something from Razerzone dot com under products. They have 8 separate drivers and come with a small amp as well. Haven't heard them but they look good on paper. Expensive though at $119.00. Seems there are gamers out there that are turning to good headphone for serious gaming pleaser Submitted for your information only.

Edit: Forgot to mention the model no. HP-1 Baracuda.
Edit: Read reviews of these phones and both said there is NO bass.

I have seen some bad advice posted on this thread so lets get something clear, you shouldn't use any headphone with a resistance over 80ohms unamplified. NEVER. If you are going to just be plugging in your headphones to the back of your computer, IPOD, or cdplayer then you shouldn't be getting something like the Sennheisers, unless of course you buy one of their low resistance variants. Though, don't be surprised when they don't have the Sennheiser sound your used to. If you are going to be using headphones for gaming I would suggest AudioTechnica, specifically the A500 or A900. You can get them from audiocubes.com for a great price. That is what I use and the soundstage is perfect and the localization is perfect for video games. They have good bass, and are great for Techno, Trance, etc. They are also good for anything which a very open soundstage would be good, such as any classical piece with a large orchestra and live performances. I must make this clear, there isn't any other headphone better for gaming, none come even close.

The Grados are very lively and energetic. They sound amazing when listening to acoustic guitar and classical guitar, AMAZING. Don't get these as your gaming headphones, their soundstage is right up in you face kinda soundstage. Also I would suggest the SR80 over the SR60, the SR60s are cheaper but you might as well pay the extra cash and get the better bass and sound quality. The SR60 have rather weak bass. The Grados shine when listening to classical music, specifically violin, piano, and most especially opera. The Grados also sound great for anything with female vocals. Norah Jones and Sarah Mclachlan sound amazing on these headphones.

Sennheiser is really Grados direct competetion. They have a very different sound and are better than the Grados if you don't like the lively and energetic Grado sound. Though if you want Sennheisers with a Grado-like sound, go for the HD595. Though you should just buy Grado for Grado sound. I haven't heard too many Sennheiser headphones so I wouldn't be the best judge of their quality.

Beyerdynamic are excellent for the bassheads. They also look extremely cool, which is always a plus. Can't say really much more about these as I just don't know.

As far as the Sony MDRs, KOSS, and Zalman go, you can spend less money on some Grado SR80s for the same or better sound quality. Don't ever in your whole life get a 5.1 headphone. I haven't heard one yet I have liked, I can't believe these things are even allowed to be even sold. Get the AudioTechnica A900 instead if you wan't a surround sound like experience in headphones, you will be happy you did. Please do yourself a favor and listen to SennHeiser, Grado, AudioTechnica, or Beyerdynamic. You will notice the difference right away. Some people do like the Sony MDR series, but they aren't my cup of tea.

A few closing remarks, remember this last part if it is the last thing you ever learn in your life. FRIENDS NEVER LET FRIENDS BUY BOSE. NEVER EVER. For the sake of everything that is just, right, proper, and true, never do such a horrible eggregious thing. Bose sells people on their marketing and not their sound. You spend more for less quality. Remember never go over the 80ohm mark for unamped sound. As far as spending goes, I wouldn't spend more than $200-$300 US on headphones unless you are going to buying a very nice amp to go along with those headphones. That range is the sweet spot anyways. When you start spending more you get into diminishing returns rather quickly.

Lastly, go to headfi.org for all your headphone questions, discussion, and needs. You won't find a better audiophile community. And remember, these are my opinions based upon my listenening preferences.

I've been using American Acoustics's 770M headphones. I think they are good for gaming and music .... They aren't the best of the best but they are ok...

headphones

I noticed that nobody is using Pioneer's HDJ1000. I've owned these for about 6 months now and I am impressed. These ones kick so much ass. Best sounding headphones I've ever heard.

i've heard those, pretty good for pro dj style headphones, nice bass response, but they sacrifice the clarity and response of more studio oriented cans

The Razer Headsets are what I have. The reviewers are wrong there is bass. Turn on bass redirection and eable sub gain. because I was like WTF are those reviewers are on. These headsets does have bass. other wise it be all tribble which there not.

I been using them for a week now and I enjoy them. They burn in so they sound better also. Yea I'lll be getting the sound card soon i hope.

But These do have bass thats why I dont really like listening to reviewers. Some times they dont know what there doing and every time I go use something they turn out to be wrong every fricking time.

I use Bass redirection and I have it on 80 thx and then I have Sub Gain on And they do Thump. without bass redirection the singal dont go to the subs.

I played couple of games to know something is up if the reviewers said there was no bass when their is.

I just recently picked up my first headphone amp (CMOY), and I always thought headphone amps were just for high impedance headphones. Wrong, I can't believe how "clear" it makes the music. Just totally jaw dropping, and really makes those that think their cans sound great even better. Think I'm going to start building them to give as gifts.

I have had it, I need to get a new pair of headphones. I currently have a SONY MDR-700 and I am not satisfied with the clarity or the bass in them. Can any of you please recommend me a good pair of headphones up to a couple of hundrend $? Comfortable too.
For gaming, sound and music.

They are only going to be used in a room, so portability is the least of my concerns.
Sound quality and perhaps good enough to not having to hear anything happening outside.

ok the v700s are DJ style cans right? if you want to keep a similiar style, try the Sony MDR-v6 - probably cheaper than the v700 (looks cheaper) but the sound quality is what matters - but you may find the response a little too flat or clinical for your liking

i take it when you mention music, you mean for just listening, rather than creation, so maybe the v6 isn't best suited for that, and you want "closed" headphones, for isolation, so check out the Sennheiser HD280 Pro or Autiotechnica A900

there's a wide range of headphones out there in that sort of price range with what you need - the best advice i can give is go instore with a sound source you know pretty well (such as a CD) and take a listen to as many pairs as you can

I will have a look for those pairs online. Going to a store and checking them is not going to happen. This is Greece.

There is no way I will go to any store. Difficult to explain. Even if there are in Greece.

Do you think the Razer Barracuda are good enough? I mean as good as the other two pair mentioned above?

BTW, are there any headphones that do not actualy rest on your ears? Do not touch at all if possible?

i haven't heard the barracuda's but from stu's review they sound decent, but i don't know how they'd match up to a studio set

as for headphones that don't touch the ears, i've never heard of such a pair sorry, and they'd most likely not block any sound at all

These rest over your ears, but don't sit on them: Sennheiser HD280 Pro

If that is what you mean, but ones that do not touch your ears. It would really depend on the size of your ears/head since they are headphones after all.

I meant that the "foam" do not touch the ears. No matter how soft they make them, when they have press on my ears, I don't like it.

I guess I will order the Razer ones. This 5.1 sounds vaguely exciting.
I will decide later today. They are about the same price as the HD280 pro. I just hope they have an extension for the USB because that tiny cable no way is going to reach both my sound card and the USB plug.

BTW, is this whole thing about burning the headphones at max volume for like 2 days based on reality or what?

You don't want to play them at max volume, just right below the point of clipping. It's mainly to break them in so they sound more natural.
