??? DVD format questions

So I have 8 files on my camera that I want to burn onto DVD. The DVD is goin to be for 70-year old couple who don't have a computer so they need to watch it on a standard DVD player (the one by the TV).

Can a normal DVD player read DVD+R DL disks or would I need DVD-R or DVD-ROM or something else?
Is there a specific file format that I need to use to make it readable on the DVD player?

I know it's a really simple question but I need to get it right as I will be sending the finished DVD overseas. My own DVD player stopped working a few months ago so I having nothing to test it with.

Thanks

Most modern DVD players can playback the +R, -R and the DL variants. Older players might not have support for the +R format. Best way would be to get some -R discs. Usually the files in Video DVD's are stored in sub folder called VIDEO_TS and the file type is .VOB there are also .ifo files. Usually modern cameras comes with some DVD mastering software so you might use it.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Are there any free versions or anything for Linux that would work well?

So you're saying -R for the best chance of compatability, seeing how their machine is a considerable distance and I have no idea of its age or anything?

there are also some earlier model DVD units that would only play-back DVD-RAM or +R discs (almost like a mini-format war)

iirc in the early days +R was more recommended for compatibility reasons...

best bet is to check the manual of the product

You don't even have to use a DVD disc unless the overall file size is going to exceed the capacity of a CD. In such case, you can use a CD+/-R disc and simply create a VCD. It will then play through the DVD player onto the TV as a slideshow. Have done this many, many, many times even prior to even owning a DVD burner on my PC/s.

Good luck!
