I use dvd decrypter to rip, dvd2avi to seperate audio (i save the audio as a .wav file) and create the .d2v project file which I can use in tmpgenc to encode an mpeg2 file just large enough to fit on a blank dvd-r.
But before I got my dvd burner I really liked the xvid codec ALOT better than divx.
There are step by step guides on how to do just about any kind of encodeing at doom9.org, might be doom9.net?????

try to use dvd2svcd for dvd 2 divx....... it does most of the heavy stuff it self (ripping with dvd decryptor, using ifoedit, divx settings, cce settings).
Much eassier for noobs.....
