AVI Video compression problem

I have an AVI video file that a friend of a friend made with her digital camera. The camera was turned at a 90 degree angle while the video was shot, so the video output was also turned sideways.

i have tried opening the file in SonicFoundry Vegas 4.0 and Adobe Premiere, but I get an error of "unknown compression" and the file cannot be opened with either application.

the video plays perfectly fine in windows media player, but i need to rotate it so it is right-side-up.

any suggestions on how i can convert the file to a different format or compression so i can open it with a video-editing app so i can fix it?!

thanks.

I'm not sure there's a program that can accomplish what you want to do in one fell swoop. Rather, you'll likely need a program that opens each frame so that you can rotate them correctly and then re-compose them. It's the only option that comes to mind.

yeah im not sure thats possible either on the fly, as dyre says it would probably take a frame by frame process, which would be an enormous amount of work. of course im hoping to be proved wrong here.

Donator
Try Dr.divx (www.divx.com) to recompress the file in a format that premiere can read.

shouldnt this be possible with the divx pro codec or similar with an application like virtualdub for convertion. then you could flip it in a video editing suite like premiere or pinnacle studio V8.6?

Possible, maybe. But, the rotation would have to be applied to each frame, if I understand correctly.

Actually Codec what you want to do is pretty easy with the right tool. Best of all it's free !!!!

Get yourself a copy of Virtualdub .

Since your video loads fine in media player then virtualdub should have no problem as it uses your systems codecs to read files. After loading your clip into vitualdub go to video/filters then click add.
You should see a filter called rotate that will rotate the entire video. Check it out and let us know how it
goes...

That is really cool!

I'd like to know how long it took for it to work. Of course, what size was the AVI file to begin with?

I was doing some more work with Movie Maker 2 and noticed something I'd never noticed before:

There is actually a Rotate option that allows for 180 and 90 degree rotation.
