what sort of editing and encoding do you mean?
be as specific as possible

also are you asking about graphics cards, such as Radeon or GeForce, or about digital video editing PCI cards?

Lol, yeah I know that's what you said, but I asked for specifics. What video, from where, do you want to do what to?

so far - last thing i heard was that video cards cant write to your hard drive, so it would be really hard to use them for encoding. ATI does have some kind of programable IDTC, but it doesnt have any public details, and i think it will just do WMV decoding in a future driver. if you want a nice video card tho i would suggest an ALL in WONDER ati 9700 or higher. it records TV stuff and works with other tv capture apps, u can record stuff from video VHS or other devices. hope that helps more.

Doesn't the new nVidia 6800 encode/decode video? Or is that not the same thing as you are looking for?

yes the 6800 just got the feature. but the r300 ATI cards have always had the feature. its just for decoding and their are no plans for encoding at all.

vivo is kind of differnt tho. its just weird. like if u have a video file and want to encode it then the video card wont do anything, however if u want to encode from a VCR or TV input (all in wonder), then the video card will then do some processing, but most of its just CPU and software, and its imposible to do real time dual pass encoding wich is down right better anyways.

so i still am saying that their is NO video card for encoding, however i havent seen any addon cards from pinical those are not video cards i dont think, so mabe something like that would work - tho i still think the majority of encoding is done using CPU and software until otherwise proven wrong. (and not marketing terms).

If u have a DV cam, then it will be enough to have a Firewire Card inside.
If u want to Capture and edit Analog Video (Eg TV odr VTR) then i suggest the VMagic to you. (www.vmagic.de) They have Hardware Encoder onboard. With this one u can also Transcode files via Hardware to Mpeg 1/2 Formats.
(IN highspeed *G*) Included is also Viscose, the Editor to cut and add effects.

Nice Card... i have it *G* Vmagic Plus TV.....

canopus & datavideo have very good capture devices for around $200. plextor also has a very good product in this range. i believe they also have a cheaper vers but am not positive.
i am assuming you want a good quality stand alone card/box.
if money is no object then go with canopus. their high end stuff is incredible.
