Smilie pr0digal jenius's thorough guide to Digital Video

pr0digal jenius's thorough guide to Digital Video

Part I - Transcoding AVI to DVD (same works for MPEG to DVD) Using TMPGEnc
=========================================
Test AVI File - Trainspotting.avi (717,824KB / 701MB)

Test System - Dual 3.06GHz Xeons @ 3.15GHz
- 2GB (4x 512) COrsair XMS LLPT DDR333 PC2700
- 320GB RAID 0 Array (2x160GB SATA 7200RPM Seagates)
- The rest of the specs shouldn't have too much of an impact on performance
=========================================
TMPGEnc [TMPGEnc Plus 2.521.58.169 & TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.5.20.62] -

http://www.pegasys-inc.com (pegasys.com is a hepatitis treatment site, so watch out)

First, the MPG encoder:

Ease of Use - With the wizard, it's stupidly easy(unless you have non standard video

files). Choose format type (DVD/VCD/SVCD and PAL/NTSC), Choose the input file and output

location, specify projected size(in percentage of disc useage; for 1 disc, 100%, 2 disc

200%, etc), then hit start.

Quality - Perfect duplicate in m2v/mp2 video/audio file formats
- DVD for NTSC* (MPEG-2 720x480 23.976fps CBR 2000kbps, Layer-2 48000Hz 192kbps)
(in layman's terms,DVD Video quality MPG video with 720x480 resolution at 24FPS

with dropframe encoding, constant bitrate of 2MB/s, with MP2 audio at 192KB/s and 48KHz)

-*NOTE: If you live in Europe, or have a PAL format video, you will get PAL

settings, and must tell it so at the beginning

Output Size - M2v: 4,109,634.8KB / 3.82GB
- Mp2: 394,528.3KB / 376MB

Time to Encode - 2:53:32
=========================================
Now, we use DVD Author to make this into VOB files, and from there it can be burned

Ease of Use - As with the encoder, it takes real creativity to screw this program up.

Start a new project, add the m2v file just created by the encoder(it automatically gets

the audio from the accompanying wav), create a menu(or skip if you don't care), select

ouput location, and hit 'begin output'.

Quality - It's a DVD, what can I say? quality is equal to that of the source file

Output Size - VIDEO_TS: 4406MB
- AUDIO_TS: this folder remains EMPTY...this is true of ALL DVD authoring

programs, DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN HERE

Time to Encode - 10:19
=========================================
Now We select "Open DVD Writing Tool"

Ease of Use - one click, what more do you lazy folks want? All you do is put in the

blank, and make sure it has the proper burner selected, and hti "Write DVD"...all the

file structure is already saved from the encoding you just finished.

Quality - Depends mostly on the quality of the blanks and the burner

Time To Burn - Also varies with hardware
==========================================
Closing Thoughts - This is my personal favorites of the Transcoding software, as it

allows you total control, without REQUIRING you to manually do it all yourself. It does a

very professional job, lets you change EVERYTHING...if you want to...and can be found in

30 day demo form on Pegasys's website.

Total Time From AVI->DVD - 3:03:51 + Burning(varies with burner)
Total Required Input - Media type(VCD, DVD, etc), source AVI, m2v output location,

desired size, m2v to encode, VOB output location, and a few 'Next' buttons along the way.
==========================================
Stay tuned for the next installment of pr0digal jenius's thorough guide to Digital Video:
Part II - Transcoding AVI to DVD Using Nero.

well for the cpus to be at over 5ghz (over 2ghz overclock per cpu) you would need some serious cooling (hence my reference to a cascade setup) and as you are also running stock FSB with DDR2700 im a little lost here as to what way you have your computer and dual CPUs set up.

ok... 5Ghz?? isnt the record 5.5Ghz or something. and 2700 Ram? mhh I though you can only overclock intel processors by FSB not multiplier. are you running your FSB over 40% stock speed?
