Yep, I've just recently started doing it to a full series of 24 that came across os Xvid.

I've not found anything free but No1 Video convertor was the easiest one to use.....and actually did work out free if you know what I mean.

After that use nero vision express to sort the files out and burn them.

nero vision express does that for me… encodes it to "nero digital" which can then be burnt on to a DVD

Roxio DVD Builder works great as well Just drop your video files in the menu and you can burn DVD, SVCD or VCD. Had no problems with DVD+R / DVD-R. But i am having probs with DVD-RW / DVD+RW not reading on stand alone dvd player after using Roxio. But when i do a copy disc of that same disc it seems to work fine. Im currently looking into Nero to see if my problem is software or hardware based.

Sometimes this is not as straight forward as you might think, check out the guides at www.doom9.org for help. There is a new app called DiKo which is free and I'm told very good but I haven't tried it yet...

I found that DVDXCOPY is great for strait copying and nero vision 2 burns more compatibal DVD+/-RW disc than roxio but is a bit slower with the decoding.

What would you use to encode an AVI to make it an SVCD or VCD using a standard CDR/RW (since I don't have a DVD recorder) so that it can be played in a DVD player? Can Nero Vision do that too? (I know it can be done, just don't know how and can't remember the sites I had read about it on.)

Basically, any of the guides for avi-dvd are originally guides for avi- (s)vcd so any of them should do try www.dvdrhelp.com or www.doom9.org

When you say *.avi to DVD, does it actually convert the *.avi to *.vob?
