the best thing about the new ati cards to me is the fact that they can hardware encode into divx. I would love to know how this works? i dont see anything about this in any threads or reviews. So whats the deal. How do i use something think VirtualDubMod with the X800???

hardware encoding of divx works like this... it reduces CPU cycles when u use a prefered player that utilizies the architechure for that. ie divx player from www.divx.com soon once its all aproved the same thing will be for WMV but that will be in the drivers, so it will be universal. unless ms decides to put it into there player (which both may have to be done?). however encoding will not work, ONLY decoding. there are no white papers detailing specs about any of this, nothing for nvidia or ati and this feature has supposedly been there since r300, programable video encoder or whatever its called.... good luck finding out, but your going to have to talk to some pritty high up people that know what your talking about. its basically a feature thats probably to developers who want to sign an NDA and use the feature. whowever i dont know.

ya they have the same features of what you talk about above. the nvidia solution JUST added it to their lineup in nv40, but also the same problems too. so no need to upgrade video card at all.. howeveer a processor upgrade will definatly be a great upgrade to help faster encoding. i went from 1.4 to 2ghz AMD cpu and got a great increase in encoding, not to mention the extra extentions that athlonXP have over the old thunderbirds.... you also seem to have only pc2100 memory and only 256mb of it.... strongly suggest faster memory and at least 512mb memory ... possibly a new motherboard with an nforce2chipset, as they benifit the most from high speed memory.... the cost well.. a 2400cpu is pritty cheap, you can probably go a lot higher, for the price, get something with 333mhz or 400mhz bus cpu (if ya upgrade mobo that is)... and 3200DDR would be good enough, two sticks of 256 will give you 512mb for a cheap price and dual channell memory on an nforce2 board.
