Off base
I know its probably way off base, but found something interesting last night on the net: www.mp3surround-format.com
Its made by the same people that designed mp3 but allows 5.1 channels..... in an mp3 file!!!!! and by god it works!!! you can d/l some test tracks from the site as well as a nifty little winamp plugin that wroks a treat. I'm using a audigy 2 ZS, 3538 h drivers and t7100 speakers, through winamp and using this new format, its sounds like your actually there! there is music coming from al around you and the quality even in the compressed format is awesome, do check it out, very cool stuff! supposedly that what it will lead to. I think at the moment you can only convert 5.1 WAV files to mp3 but if you could rip a DVD audio into a WAV file the convert into mp3, thats still gonna save you about 10x memory space but keep the 5.1 channels
