Pissed Pioneer DVR-109 & Ritek/Ridata Woes

To make a long story short this burner hates this media, at least this particular model.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...132-325&depa=0

It works fine for data but not video, and Nero takes a dump. Start a burn with DVD Shrink receive a write error but act like it's still burning (progress but no LED on drive). However, straight in Nero it'll error out but keep burning the disk. Weird thing is disk turns out fine, or at least I can play it in another drive.

All other media works great, even the cheap Staples DVD's.

Now what gets me is the 109 replaced my 108 which worked fine with this media. Thank god I didn't buy another c.box of this since I almost did. It's just weird since this media is even recommend for this burner. Go figure. I've written Pioneer an e-mail about it.

Tonight I've learned way too much about media manu. codes, Nero log errors, and etc. Just FYI folks.

digerati will become famous soon enough

I've always heard that Ritek makes excellent media and have been using them, Fujifilm, or TDK for all my burning needs.

Fuji's are hard to find around here for some reason. I've usd TDK's before with great success. I also tried one of the off branded dvd burning apps which doesn't use Nero. Same result, it appears the drive doesn't have the manu. code for this particular model of media.

I've always come to notice that TV units seem to have more problems with media than internal CD/DVD burners. I've never had DVD media not work in a computer's DVD rom but players ooooh yeaaaah lol

Which is pretty common, my Samsung DVD player hates DVD-R's no matter the quality of the media.

Hey Necrosis, I would give flashing the drive with the newer bios, version 1.40 which you can get HERE . Just to let you know this firmware is not listed on the American site for some stupid a$$ reason, yet it is the official 1.40 firmware (and you can get this from Pioneer UKs site too). This firmware fixes some the issues the 109/A09 is having with certain media, but not all of them (still a few brands that screw up).

I've had a ton of issues with this drive since it came out. Thankfully I've stuck with my 108 (with the PioData bios which gives +R/+R DL DVD-Rom bitsetting).

Anyways, that firmware should help you out. One thing I've found with the 109 is to record slower than what the disc will allow. Sometimes it will misread the disc as being 8x burnable, but is infact only stable at 4x or 2x.

Thanks for the info, but I've already updated the drive to that firmware revision. I have tried 4x /w this media, haven't tried 2x though. It's worth a shot. It's weird since the only real big difference in these two models is burning speeds. It would be nice if someone did a hack firmware /w the 8's media support /w the 9's speeds.

Actually, one of the misconceptions about the 109 is that it's just a faster drive with -RDL support, but it's not. This drive is actually new technology when compared to the later gens of drives (104-108). This is why Pioneer is having so much problems with it, and why I won't give up my 108 until it's fixed. Over time, and with every release of firmware they are getting better, but I have a feeling we won't see an improvement until the next drive release, or in some new 'hardware revision' drive.

Sorry to hijack the thread but does anyone know if there is a bios that will add DL support to my 107?

I must add as well though that I find my 107 very picky with media and the majority of discs burnt for video end up getting binned because of the errors that appear 1hour in.

Not that I'm aware of. I know that the latest firmware for the 107 added support for +R DL 'playback' support, but not writing support, and I'm not aware of any 'hacked' firmware that adds it.

In truth, even though I mentioned that the 104-108 is nearly the same technology compared to the 109 I should have mentioned that the 108 differs in one regard: it's DL support. It would be cool though to have it on the 107 though.
