Question about a CD recorder usage

What I want to do is record some vocal music that I have written onto a CD recorder. I will be singing and playing a keyboard. What I don't know is how to hook up a mic to this device? Do I hook up the mic directly to the recorder or do I have to hook it up to the receiver of the stereo system? I haven't bought a CD recorder yet and any advice would sure be welcomed. I am just at a loss as where to plug in the mic right now.

ok depending on the CD recorder, if it's a basic model with only a stereo line level input, you'll need a seperate mic pre-amp or mixer.

if it's a more complex protable multitracker it should have a pre-amp built in. Do you have any links to the recorders you are looking at?

I have been looking at the Sony WC500 model as the price was reasonable. But this will be my first purchase of a recorder like this and I haven't settled on any single unit yet. Any suggestions for one of these will be welcomed.

what purpose is the cd recorder going to be used for?

EDIT: with that CD recorder you will need an external pre-amp. Behringer make some pretty nice ones at a low price

I have written a few songs that I would like to burn onto a CD as I play/sing them. Nothing earth shattering just something for the family. I play a Yamaha keyboard and sing the lyrics. I would like that to be saved onto a CD. I don't have a pre amp in my system right now just a receiver, an older pioneer one. From what you say it looks like I will have to buy a pre amp along with the CD recorder.

You also need to use more expensive "audio" media with a "consumer" CD recorder.

If it's a viable alternative, I'd suggest recording on a computer, where you can then cut, fade, eq, and otherwise tinker, before writing using a drive and media that costs far less.

Need edit software, free, just use audacity!
