Yeah same with my VIA 8237 controller... own RAID BIOS/drivers etc. similar in a way to some SCSI cards and the SCSI BIOS and all.

I just find it weird that theres RAID on that JMicron chip for the internal and external SATA ports... only real use for that is a RAID 1 array for an external SATA drive.

so you mean the P5B is also have RAID support under the JMicron controller?
how many SATA ports on the P5B (include the eSATA)?

on my board i can setup RAID0 under the 2 internal SATA ports of the JMicron controller.

The P5B has 6 ports on the ICH8, 1 internal on the JMicron and 1 external on the JMicron for a total of 8.

The 2 JMicron ports are the only RAIDable ones there.

6 ports all together.

if your friend want to use RAID0 under the P5B, then i think he can still do it. it's not convenience... but since the board has no other option on it.

here's an example of the JMicron controller... i took this pic when i tried using it on my board

vista raid

PangingJr,

I have a Gigabyte-965P-DS3 that I just got a few days ago. I would like to install Vista onto a RAID on the Gsata controller that you identified as a Jmicron JMB363. I tried using some drivers from the Asus website, but have had no luck.

After loading the drivers in Vista setup, it behaives normally and lets me partition / choose a partition. But right after I pick one and click next to install, an error pops up saying "Windows could not determine if this computer contains a valid system volume." Then it makes me start over.

I am using the latest DS3 bios (F6) and the drivers from Asus for the Jmicron are listed as v1.12.07.00.

Could you post a link to the drivers that you've had success with? Can you offer me any suggestions? Thanks!

trevelyan1517,
version 1.14.01.00... http://www.station-drivers.com/page/jmicron.htm
there will be a AsusSetup file in the driver package don't run it. if you want to install Windows on a RAID volume* of the Gigabyte SATA2 RAID and you've already setup the RAID via its BIOS setup program, then try creating RAID drivers disk using files in the Floppy32 folder the exists in package.

note-- once you are done with the RAID set up in its BIOS setup program then go back into the main BIOS setup program and go to Advanced BIOS Features and then make sure that the RAID volume is in the first order under the menu "Hard Disk Boot Priority"
then restart the computer with Windows DVD and be ready to load the RAID drivers during the installation of the Windows...

note-- i have not yet tried installing Windows on to the Gigabyte RAID volume, but configured the RAID via BIOS and then updating the controller drivers within Windows via the device manager.
what i've tried with the Gigabyte RAID controller in the Vista (build 5600 for x86) was to use the RAID volume as a drive for data only.

if you have any more questions on how to update the Gigabyte RAID controller drivers, then you can open a new question in the Windows Vista forum section.

acording to its spec on the product page the board only has 6 SATA ports.
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?m...3&l2=11&l3=307

Unless Asus has the spec for it wrong?

then why don't you check and correct the number of the SATA ports to this thread? can you do that?

didn't you build a conroe based computer for your friend using the P5B board? could you ask your friend to check it?

I did indeed build a Conroe P5B based system for a friend and I'll get him to check it once he's home

that's what i thought. so you're going to help me clear the info. and please do that.
i hate to think that i knew (when i actually don't) there are total of 6 SATA ports on the P5B board, since i get this info far before the board was released... then from Asus's and the product web page itself that i've checked it once again after it's released... then again and again when you were telling me differently.

It actually is 6 ports, I only thought 8 because it came with an eSATA bracket (I don't think its supposed to this box was open when we got it so who knows), and though this person isn't a friend anymore I did find out the board itself does have 6 like you said Panging, sorry for the mixup

vista raid

Panging Jr,

I just wanted to say thanks for that link you posted. I finally found that the 1.14.01.00 WHQL drivers worked in Vista's setup, and allowed me to successfully install Vista onto my RAID array.

Thanks again!

H3X4D3C1M4L,
thanks for checking that.

===========================

trevelyan1517,
no problem.
i believe there are still many users (who have the same Gigabyte model boards with yours and these (mentioned) boards) out there trying to get RAID to work with the Vista, but have not found or tried the drivers yet.
anyway, i'm glad to know that it's working for you.
