Valve Stress Test - Radeon X800 Pro vs GeForce 6800GT @ EB

Hanners has put up a very good article comparing a X800 pro and a Geforce 6800GT running Counterstrike Source.

"We've been seeing a slew of benchmarks since the introduction of Valve's Stress Test as part of the CounterStrike: Source beta a few days ago. Well, now it's our turn to look at things here at Elite Bastards, so we've benchmarked both ATI and nVidia's more readily available boards - aka the Radeon X800 Pro and GeForce 6800GT - using this new test, as well as throwing some 6800 Ultra scores into the mix for good measure. We've tested using a host of different settings, as well as taken a look at the performance hit the two cards have with varying levels of anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering enabled"

Thanks to Joe for the email.

???Testing these Cards with a midrange (Amd2500xp/512mb) system, what do they try to proof ? how it wil run on a mid range rig??
I would get a decent system first before buying a Top $500 V.Card..

That is a good article, I can honestly say I believe too.

XP SP1a = 54 FPS

XP SP2 = 62 FPS

I got a midrange system and a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (not Overclocked).

I doubt there will be a huge a FPS difference between ATI and nVidia on the high end cards. The midrange cards, I am unsure of. I would like to see a bench with they kinds of cards, I probably see the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro being the best midrange card for HL2. But, you never know.

There is a little stuttering, but not as bad as far cry at times. It only seems to do the stuttering when you first join, but after that it seems to run very smooth.

so there are no mid level loads etc? reason im asking is, when i benched farcry with 512 meg of ram it seriously skewed figures on certain levels.

No, it seems to load just fine. If you just joined a server, either observer or playing in Round 1. When there are alot guys (models) in one area it will stuttering a bit, it usually does it for the first round you are in. Then it runs just smooth.

I was checking out to see how much memory CS:Source uses, it's around 200-250MB. If you minimize CS:Source, then try to bring it back up, it causes a memory leak. It starts eating up 2-3MB a second.

I tried the stress test once and run smooth. When i changed the resolution (AA,AF etc etc) and tried it again, well how can i describe it, the bricks on floor had a red glowing colour (which obviously is not correct). Is it a known problem this? I have the latest forceware for my FX5950U.

Screenshot (1280x1024 res, about 255KBs)

BTW, this is my first post here so, hello!

I belive some of the reviewers/testers mentioned that you had to exit the game when changing resolutions or AA/AF settings, or the VST would have glitches, "atifacts" and skewed results - guess that explains your "pinkish" result

Ill go look for a link, ifanybody find it important, im a lazy guy

Thanx Scot, it seems that this fixes the prob (although it is a burden exiting and re-launching the game...)
