what drivers are you using? Are you using the latest ATI/omega drivers? What about your chipset drivers? Usually the newest available drivers help out your scores quite a bit. Speaking of chipset, what chipset do you have? Is it the nForce 2 chipset, VIA, or SIS? How much memory do you have in your system?

Give us more specs on your system.

I'm using the latest omega drivers, I'm not sure about my chipset drivers though, i will check on those, and I think I have a VIA chipset, 512mb DDR333, and im planning on buying 512mb more.

PS: what program can I use to ID my system thoroughly?

sandra, CPU-Z are two programs i use all the time to find the most accurate specs on my system . If you want, get rid of your DDR333 and get DDR400. Then you'll be able to OC your 3000+ and get some better scores in 3Dmark

Ok it is VIA, and I have found some new drivers, I will download those and test again.

So I should just get a stick of DDR400 instead of adding another DDR333?
You can't mix DDR's correct?

true. I meant to say you should get rid of your DDR333 stick, and get two DDR400s. w/the DDR400 in place, you will be able to overclock your CPU, then that way you can start getting higher scores.

Ok i'll be able to atleast get one stick of that DDR400 this weekend, if not both.

Well, do this. When you get the stick of memory take out the DDR333 stick, and run just the DDR400 stick in your system. Try overclocking your system a little bit by manually raising the FSB (1Mhz at a time...remember to increase voltages to maintain system stability) and re-benching your system in 3Dmark. OCing your CPU you'll find out will give you just what you need to break 1,500.

Also try finding some program to OC your video card. Back when i had my 9700pro, i used Rage3D to overclock it. But i'm aware that the XT series of cards have Overdrive. But there are also other programs out there that will allow you to OC your card. Just use what you feel most comfortable with.

I use radlinker and ATI tray tools to overclock the video card currently, but have come to found that ATI tray tools overclocking tends to cause system instabibility.

3Dmark03 is a more gfx card based game more than anything. Of course having a good CPU does affect your score in that test, you will notice that overclocking your CPU will not give you much of an increase in your scores as would overclocking your gfx card will.

who is the manufacturer of the memory you have? What are the timings you have on the memory when you benchmark? Having the tightest timings possible also affects your score. Are you running your memory syncronous or asyncronous w/your CPU? Also, just because you have DDR400, that doesn't mean you're running your memory at 400Mhz. If your MoBo supports dual channel DDR, then i recommend that you use that feature. It will also improve not just your 3Dmarks score, but also just overall performance of your computer.

When benchmarking you want to have good memory, CPU, and video card to have the best score possible.

On 3DMark05 with all at stock I get 1708, the 9500pro and 9600xt tend to benchmark about the same across a variety of games. I wouldnt worry too much. 3d05 is silly, even the top of the range systems arnt getting over 30fps in all the game tests, games just arn't gonna hurt your system that bad for a long time, and when they do theyll look a lot better, its not been very well optimised at all imho

true, but the higher the score in 3Dmark (all), the higher your FPS and quality settings you can use in games. A 9500pro is definately better than the 9600xt. All a 9500pro is, is pretty much a watered down 9700pro.

you guys aren't scoring all that bad. You guys are right where you're supposed to be at. But if you want to score higher on 3Dmark, then you gotta tweak out your system as much as possible. Overclocking is a gimme, but you also need to disable any services and/or background programs running on your machine taking up rescourses (sp?) to give you a better score on your system.

Can you give us a link to a website that says what is safe to turn off and what is not?

Yes because thats a cpu test, so I think it focuses more on the CPU power than on the graphic power.

Just go to Start>run>and type msconfig. When the window pops up go to the "start up" tab and simply go through it. Uncheck anything you do not need to auto start upon start up of your computer.

corsair is good memory, but if you want better performing memory, you want to have at least CL (Cas Latency) 2.5. Memory timings are also play a part in getting better scores and FPS in games. The lower/tighter the timings on memory, the better score you can get in 3Dmark and higher FPS you can get in games. Check out newegg under "Any DDR400 512Mb" and just go through the list, and pick what you can afford that has a CL 2.5 or better. My preferences are: Corsair, Mushkin, Crucial, Buffalo, Geil, and OCZ. If you don't want to buy from newegg, buy from where ever you want to buy, but any of those companies.

What does it mean when it has dashes in the number for the CL latency?
Like, 2.5-6-3-3.

those are the timings for the memory. The lower the timings, the better. The best timings available for DDR400 are 2-2-2-5. But for memory w/those timings, you'll be paying an arm and a leg.

http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.ph...d=377&Itemid=0

check out that read on memory timings. It'll explain some things better than i will be able to.

Well timings are important but are very weak compare to your gfx card. My OC 9700Pro gives me around 2500 in 3DMark05 with my actual config, so 3000 with a 9800XT and 1800 with a 9600XT seem quite correct after all
