??? Benchmarking a Web Server

Does anyone know of any tools, and/or programs (hopefully free) that would allow me to test the performance of a web server? I need system performance as well as net performance, /w loads and so fourth.

Thanks

free is unlikely

The only webserver testing tools I've used are load-based ones that cost money. Basically you define what the webserver is supposed to do (e.g. transactional traffic pass through to j2ee app? file serving?) and then create load profiles in the testing tool.... it then generates traffic with multiple concurrent sessions and gives you a sense of overall performance.

I'm not sure but I think Webtrends has a very basic load testing tool, its ~ $500 last I checked. The ones I've used are Mecury Loadrunner which starts @ $5-10k for a 1000 session license.
