kx3537,SBlive,XPsp2,no 'mixer',no sound, no plug and play thingy
Ok... it all started with a nice game called Operation Flashpoint. I had the latest creative drivers from 2003 and everything was nice except for one little problem: when playing with the audio acceleration on (which makes the game sound a lot better) and using vehicles, the vehicles engine sounds would be a little distorted. So, in the OFP forums I read that this was caused by some bug in the creative drivers and that kx drivers would fix this and also the ctd problems when certain sounds are played (which I was not suffering from with the '03 drivers, only with '02). Ok then, sounds good so far, on with the installation...
Here's where it all started to go wrong. I guess I kind of screwed up XP somehow by installing the kx drivers (3537 full) without uninstalling the creative drivers first. I got a blue screen during the audio driver installation (it was ct*something*.sys that caused the error) and after a reboot, I went to the device manager: nice... no cd drives anymore, no sb, no plug and play enumerator (or something like that). So, uninstalled the kx drivers... reboot... ok good: xp finds sb and installs drivers automaticly, cd drives are back, another reboot, wtf: no sound, no plug and play thingy. Tried to install the kx stuff a couple more times, got the drivers looking ok in device management but got an error window on startup about not being able to load kxdriver or something. Then I reinstalled the creative drivers without problems... except: no sound, no plug and play thingy in system devices, creative mixer proggy in the audiohq says 'there is no mixer device detected. shutting down mixer'. I notice that cthelper.exe is not running. So... any ideas? And don't bother suggesting reinstalling XP, thank you. |

Did you try a driver rollback with system restore??
If you did un-successfully then.... D/L DH's Driver Cleaner and install Boot to safemode Remove the CL and KX stuff (add remove programs) Goto device manager and manually remove the soundcard AND joyport drivers. and run Driver Cleaner (choose to remove ALL CL and KX stuff here too) Re -boot - cancel XP from installing a driver for the sound card if you can Run KX install. If NO device compatable is found - goto the device manager and manually remove the (windows) driver for the sound card and joyport. and do a refresh and retry installing KX (I had to do this once, but for get the circumstances - it may have been when I added my 2nd KX card) Maybe that will work for you. |

I can't even get the integrated ac97 audio to work, the drivers seem to be installed properly in device manager but control panel->sound config says 'No Audio Device'. On the driver properties page I see these devices like audio devices-sb live, mixer devices-sb live mixer etc but when I click on their properties it says 'Status: Driver is enabled but not been started.'.
Unfortunately, I have disabled system restore. I'll try that DH driver cleaner... |

A school admin walks in and (to ndicate that she noticed how hard we were all working as it turns out) says: 'Asses and elbows, thats ALL I see' I said in reply : 'I don't know about this guy next to me, but I must be an elbow, maam' - end OT side note: |

Ok, here's a pic of what's going on:
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/220/kx2hi.gif Now I've tried dh cleaner and everything. I think the problem is not the drivers them selves but some windows component. Like... that plug and play thingy that is still missing from the system devices. You see, XP detects the sound card and installs drivers and everything but doesn't start them or something like that. My guess is that the kx installer does something to windows when it starts the installation and reverts the change after it's done but if you get bsod in the middle of it... well then you're shit outta luck like me here. I think I'm almost desperate enough to try the repair function of xp installer next. |

well I notice 2 things -
1) the device manager looks ok 2) I dont see the KX mixer applet in the system tray Also - what is set as the default windows playback device and recording device? (the 'Audio' tab in the 'sound and audio device porperties') They should be set to KX - can you select any there? It would seem your seeing this because there no windows 'default' playback device set..?? |

Yay! I got the enumerator thingy back and audio works again. Here's what I did:
"Tony Marques (12 messages posted) copy machine.inf from %windir%\inf to a temp dir remove line 20: ExcludeFromSelect=* add new hardware have disk (select the temp dir with the modified machine.inf) and install the plug and play software enumerator swenum.sys is found in system32\drivers streamci.dll is found in system32 or they can be found on your windows disk" |

Nah, I guess I deleted the enumerator from device manager by accident, it displayed as non working device or something after I first tried installing kx. I got them installed and everything works now. Except that the original problem of distorted sound in the game only got worse. Thanks anyway.
