strange crash
I have a problem which is very strange :
Some time ago i found out that if i start certain programs (or combinations like DScaler (tv- application) and the windows-flipper space cadet) my system crashes immediately or after some time in a very strange matter. The Screen goes black (no signal) and hd-led is on permanently. Reset and Powerswitch (atx) don't work so i have to power off the Powerunit. After poweron nothing happens. i have some sort of diagnostic lights on board so i can see that really nothing happens. the bios is not initalized. the only(!) way to fix this is to remove the cpu, power on, wait a while, poweroff, put the cpu back in and the system works again (resetting the bios does not work). until today i thought it was a hardware/chipset driver problem of some sort, but i found out something: it only happens if the kx-mixer application is running (System Tray)! could it be that this application causes such an error ? config : System : Windows 2000 Ver 5.00.2195 Service Pack 3 CPU : Athlon Thunderbird 700 checked with Prime95 RAM : SD-Ram Memory 384mb in 128(Noname) and 256(Goldstar) also checked Mainboard : MSI K7T Pro (Newest Via Driver) Chipset : Via Technologies Inc VT8363/5 KT133/KM133 System Controller (from SISoft Sandra) Bus Speed : 133Mhz BIOS : Award 6.00 PG, version 3.6 (MSI) CD-Rom : Plextor CD-R PX-W1210A Sound : Soundblaster !Live (CT4830) (KXDriver newest version) Video : GEforce 2 MX (Creative newest Nvidia Driver) TVCard: Pinnacle PCTV (Newest driver) Network : Realtek RTL8139(A)-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter Thx |

this seems to be a hardware problem
kX Mixer cannot cause it, but it can force the hardware issue to become more frequent /Eugene |

I think that removing the CPU is kind of drastic. I am sure it will help to turn off the power switch on the back of your computer for 30-60 seconds, then turn it back on. The computer should now boot. If you do not have such a switch (old computer etc...) pull the power chord for the same amount of time. This is probably not a very common problem, but this will help resetting som bad state data in your chipset. (I don't remember the exact details anymore, but I have experienced this a couple of times... )

Ah. Sorry I just discovered you'd already tried that...
![]() ... but if this is not a hardware failure, I would guess your system is ready for the once-in-a-year reinstall! ![]() |
