System volume setting.

I've got a weird problem recently; I'm not sure but I think it appeared after I installed the 3528 drives for my sblive 5.1; I cannot save the volume setting, both by clicking the little speaker icon and lowering the volume and neither by entering the audio properties screen, what happens is that I lower the volume press apply -> the volume is lowered -> if there is some kind of system sound (finished deleting bell etc) the sound automatically reverts to MAX setting the same behavior is invoked if I press the icon again... Needless to say that it doesn't remember the volume setting between boots.
