Start-up bug
I have been having this recurring problem with your drivers. I have used 5.10.0.3533, 32, and 28. They all have this quirk that when I kick off a sound activity, instead of normal sound I intermittently get a loud high-pitched squeal. My impression is that something is getting into the wrong state either when exiting or starting up. This happens if I start and stop an MP3/wave that's playing in any of a variety of programs: sound forge 6.0, Real Player, windows media player... It seems like half of the time when the system sends audio for error events or some other notification it squeals instead of playing the sound correctly. I am using XP with an e-mu APS card. Sometimes it gets pretty stuck in this mode and the only way I have been able to get out of it is by playing a midi file. It sort off beeps or sounds tinny for awhile and then it goes back to normal. This can be a real pain when I am editing a large sound file.

Sorry, I am new to the forum and did not see that. Yes its the same issue.
No issues with APS on win98 when it had non-kx drivers. It was OK for a long time on KX and XP, but some forgotten upgrade ago, it started showing this problem. I use the bay as well as the card and use both the analog and digital channels. I noticed when I am playing a sound in Sound Forge and the silence variant of the problem shows up, the power VU bars in the program show that they are still handling a normal signal, but nothing comes out of the speakers. If I start and stop the sound signal enough times, it eventually usually clears up. As I mentioned in the other post, another way I found to clear it up is to call up a music program (tabledit) that uses midi out. Its really strange because initially every note event produces a beep, then I think it starts producing the tones but weak or distorted, then it comes back to normal. Its like listening to the computer work its way through some kind of blockage in stages. When the midi clears it up, the other programs are OK until it starts over. If its any help I have recorded "digital in" to hard disk for 8 hours non-stop and have not seen any problems with the WAV files collected. This only shows up on output. |
