??? removing IE kills kX

Hello,

I've been using kX for a while now and I'm very grateful to the people involved in the project. I have a Live! and an Audigy and have been moderately satisfied with them, just dissapointed with Creative's clumsy and bloated driver package.
I figure everybody here thinks the same

I like to tinker with stuff and I used a program called IEradicator (www.litepc.com) to remove Internet Explorer completely from my system (WinXP Pro SP1), since I use Firebird (the kX among browsers ). I've had no problems so far except one: I can't start the kX mixer or setup anymore

The error I get is:

Debug Assertion Failed!

Program: c:\Program Files\kX P.my\roject\3533\kxsetup.exe
File: g:\. projects\emu10k1\.my\kxgui\file.cpp
Line: 746

Expression: SUCCEEDED(hr) && gPicture

Clicking on retry (to debug the application) reports an error in kxgui.dll.

I believe this has something to do with the MFC libraries?
I definately wouldn't like to have to install IE again to be able to use the kX applications. I've also seen Eugene say in a thread that he's working to make the project MFC library independent ? I believe this to be a solution to my probllem?

Perhaps a remark. I know the project is still very much in the beta stage (but that's fine because nearly all the software I use is ). Why does kX need to copy each file to the Windows\system32 as well as to the directory you've specified? Seems a bit Creative-like to me (I never figured why they needed to spread their dlls and other junk all over the system instead of keeping them all nice and tidy in the folder you've specified)

Just my thoughts, but then again I tend to be kinda anal over these things

All windows drivers are stored in the system folders. That's just how it's done. Driver install is ultimately handled by windows. The software package is the only bit that the manufacturer really has complete control over. As for your error, you'll probably find that removing IE causes problems with more than just Kx, but it should be possible to restore what you need without reinstalling it.

In fact, it sounds like the debug libraries installed with Kx have been replaced. If you install the full package with debug libraries again - it might do it. You can get this seperately too.

Sad

I give up
I tried uninstalling, cleaning up the registry after it, rebooting and reinstalling, both a full install as well as just the MFC component one, no avail. Tried replacing the files in windows/system32 with the ones in libs.zip offered on the page.

Oh well, it's my own fault, clicked the disclaimer.

Thanks for the reply.

the problem is with OLE -- kX Mixer relies on the OLE functionality for extracting images
I doubt you'll manage to make anything work w/o installing IE 4.0 or later

Fixed it yeah
Installed a file called vbrun60sp5.exe which replaces the OLE DLL's
Windows complained a few times about system files being replaced but then again doesn't it always
Now kX runs happy again...

No IE required

AFAIK, IEradicator isn't even compatible with Windows XP at all! When I looked at litepc.com, it only mentioned Windows 98 and Windows 2000.
