driver install causes OS to freeze

I have tried installing the creative software - I have tried installing the KX software - neither one is getting through the driver install without causing the operating system to freeze. I have looked at various places, seeing that the Audigy 2 platinum is causing this problem for a lot of people, at least with the creative software. I was curious if anyone had some ideas on what might be causing this, or what I could do to possibly fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This has been tried with 2k as well as XP.

The cpu is an HP, 9780 pavillion. 256 ram. 900mhz athlon.

Please help me

Search for a memory testing utility. You probably have faulty RAM....
