no sound device

i had problems with my kx drivers that i couldnt solve, error initializing winMM subsystem so at the end of the day i decided to buy another card. but i cant get this to work either. no sound device listed in the sound and audio devices under control panel. under the properties of the driver its listed as enabled but not started. i blame the kx drivers for this state my computer is in now, because its these drivers that introduced the problem in the first place. can anybody please help me to restore my system? i use win xp. more details on the situation wih the kx drivers under the topic help! erro initializing winMM subsystem (i think its linked to in this msg). the current soundcard is a m-audio audiophile 2496, the drivers install without a problem and there is sound in certain programs but not in those that (i guess) get their sound config from the control panel sound and audio devices, like windows media player, my webbrowser, soundforge... ie, my system is crippled.

no, it sounds like the issue is with your computer, if another soundcard does not work, then it is no kX's problem

Hi gido99!

Nobody says that it´s a must be for you to use the drivers. Don´t forget: there are thousands of users using the kX package with a lot of success and they are very happy compared to original driver users - specially related to music stuff. So please don´t blame kX if your computer has problems to recognize the sound device - it may have different reasons and nothing to do with kX. If you can figure out where´s the problem, tell us more about it.

and you have to give some more infos about windows, your soundcard, the kx driver you tried to use. maybe you don´t understand your pc, we are soo many happy kx-user, so the problem is only by you and your pc.

i have same issues.

if i follow install procedure from safe mode - drivers work for one session, that is - after next reboot message "... winmm subsystem ..." come.
installing from normal boot mode do not change anything.
there are no errors in device manager, but in control panel there are no sound devices to chose.

i think it is may be some boot order problem, or incompatibility with another driver. i need to say that kx drivers worked fine for me for long time, but now something is wrong, dont know what exactly.

What is your operating system, which equipment you are using, which soundcard model you try to install?

as original driver have stoped to work as well in the same way, then it must not be driver fault...

ive solved the problem via complete replacing of
c:\WINNT\system32\config\system
with its clean copy and so reinstalling all drivers.

ant_man,

Did you do a system restore to fix the files in c:\WINNT\system32\config\system? It might be helpful for others with the same problem to know how you did it?

literally, i have booted to second Windows and from there i renamed

c:\winnt\system32\config\system
to
c:\winnt\system32\config\system_old
for back up

and copied
c:\winnt\repair\system
to
c:\winnt\system32\config\system

then rebooted back to first OS and it begin reinstalling drivers.
One may do that from recover console, i think.
