Sound settings reverting to default

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a feature, or it's just a bug.

Whenever I open an application that makes use of sound (TV capture software, media players, and even instant messaging programs!) my sound settings revert to the defaults (everything is muted and the volume levels are all zero.)

It's very irritating to have to readjust my volume settings every time I want to open a new application (yes, I do have a profile saved.)

Am I missing something, or have I found a bug?

Win2k SP4 w/ all necessary updates
SB Live 4.1 (NOT 5.1)
DX 9.0c

EDIT: I'm using the .37 version of the drivers and mixer.

im also getting very irritated by it... if forgot to turn down the vol from 50% before i shutdown the next time i use my comp anything that handles sounds will default back to 50%, resulting in ROCK n ROLL!!!
hiaz.... the only solution now is to turn the volume down to the volume u generally use b4 u shut down.
