exclamation Random explosion sounds

Not sure why but I get what sounds like little explosions whenever network utilization picks up to a moderate rate on my system ever since switching to the kx drivers.

I can give system specifics if you need them, just be specific about what info you need and I'll be sure to post it.

Thanks!

Does it happen often or once every few minutes\hours?

I noticed that a sound like that happens to me once in a while. I only notice it when there are no audio playing as it's too quiet to be noticeable otherwise. It does not happen often so I haven't been able to connect it to some event like a network transfer.

this is constant, whether or not i have music playing

i've only connected it to network transfers as yet, i'll have to see what i get when i transfer video from my DV-cam or some other operation that steals a ton of bandwidth from the PCI bus,

hopefully someone here will read this that's had and solved this issue in the past

You mean that it did not happen with the creative drivers, right?

You could try to move the soundcard to another slot. It may be picking interference from a card or a chip that is close to the sound card. It usually does not happen but it's worth a try. Apart from that, I don't know what to suggest.

What's the model of your soundcard? Maybe there is an issue (that I'm not aware of) with a specific model.

No, I never had this issue with the creative drivers

it does seem that it only happens during times of network activity and the card, while close to the onboard LAN controller chip is as far away as it can be, also, as this was never an issue with the creative drivers, i'm leaning away from it being related to its proximity to any specific chip or component in the system.

the LAN controller is on IRQ 18, the SBLive is on IRQ 17, shared with the secondary video controller. I've tested whether it is an IRQ sharing issue by running several graphics intensive applications on that display and there was no issue, so i proceeded to run the boradband speed tests at boradbandrepotrs.com and all during the tests i experienced this issue, it is DEFINITELY linked to the network adapter in some way

also noteable is the fact that these are NOT simple pops and clicks, they appear to be pops and clicks being passed through the (disabled) reverb and chorus effects

unfortunately, due to my current hardware configuration, my system is EXTREMELY picky about where I place my PCI cards, while everything would likely still WORK if i moved the SBLive, overall system performance would take such a hit that, honestly, i'm leaning toward a preference of simply disabling my LAN controller while I'm recording until a fix is released for this issue.

To give yo ua bit more of an understanding what i'm working with, here's a rough ASCII representation of my mainboard, including all hardware

[EDIT]
Ok, that didn't work

here's the same drawing, done in notepad

This is what i hear when downloading a file at 4mbps

http://bluntanda40.us/halfnhalf/explosions.wav

while uploading it to my server (on my LAN, 100mbit) i was getting louder and louder explosions as it was writing to the server in chunks at a higher datarate

I'll transfer a large file from to/from the server and record the results of that for you to hear and examine

3 more for your listening pleasure...

I transfered some files from my server at between 4 and 18mbps and got this:
http://bluntanda40.us/halfnhalf/explosions-recieve-4-18mbps.wav

Transfered a large file TO my server at between 12 and 25mbps and got this:
http://bluntanda40.us/halfnhalf/explosions-send-12-25mbps.wav

I had my server ping-flood this computer at 15 to 50mbps and got this:
http://bluntanda40.us/halfnhalf/explosions-ping_flood_from_server-15-50mbps.wav

Can you explain why you think that? I suppose that you used a Peak plugin.

It probably won't help but try this :
-right-click the DSP and click 'Clear DSP'
-Load ProFX plugins 'Src' and 'kxlt' (they may have different names if you haven't installed Lemury new plugins).
-Connect FXBus 0/1 of 'Src' to Analog Front Out (or Rear Out) of 'kxlt'
-Transfer data and listen.

The goal here is to make sure that the noise is not caused by a plugin from the default DSP and to make sure that it is coming from FXBus 0/1.

Can you post the model name of your motherboard.

You could use a pci ethernet card instead of the onboard lan. I've seen cards as cheap as 6$ CA at wal-mart. You don't have room for another card so it's not really an option.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I've had the issue of hearing the cpu operations before but that was with an old soundcard. Changing the card solved the issue. It's not the same problem as what you're facing and soundblaster cards using the emu10kX chips are recent enough (old cards sometime had that noise problem) to normally not have that kind of problem.

cost isn't the issue, as i run a systems consulting firm and happen to have a room full of hardware to pick from, a PCI NIC would be essentially free, but yes, there is the issue of not having anywhere to put it.

I've actually cleared the DSP and listened with absolutely NOTHING loaded into the card, no means of getting input or output. same result. So i've ruled out anything relating to the DSP plugins being used, in any way, shape, or form

the model number of my motherboard is listed in that drawing and i've got my case closed up again so it would be some amount of trouble for me to look it up (I suppose I could refer to the drawing, but by then you've already done that)

I have set up, right now, 4.1 speaker configuration, copy, so both speaker outs give the same output (using the rear out for my good amp that i record to videocassette through, for the better sound quality, other amp just has a few pair of headphones hooked to it, for monitor purposes while recording. I have enabled "Route Headphones to Center/Subwoofer" and have a pair of phones connected there as well. All of these outputs experience the noise. I've tried disabling this, changing speaker configuration, everything concieveable, and it just won't go away.

really, I don't do alot of massive transfers and the occaisional pop and click doesn't bother me, i don't do ANY transfer when i'm recording or copying to tape so it really isn't MAJOR other than being a serious issue with either the hardware or the drivers, so I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention so it can be resolved in future versions of the driver.

Too bad I can't seem to track it down, though.

I've even tried the highest AND lowest PCI latency settings, no effect whatsoever. removed the IEEE1394/USB2 card and PCI video card for a test run, no effect.

it's definitely the LAN chip, and it's got to be a driver issue since i never had this problem with the creative drivers... but i'll NEVER go back to them since i get so much better sound quality from the kx drivers (pop.click notwithstanding)

still, excellent work and thank you, kx devs, for making it available free

if i ever stumble across a fix, i'll let you know about it, hopefully you'll do the same!!

I stand corrected, I must have had a bit too much to drink the night i tested with empty DSP...

The problem lies in the Reverb Lite DSP, I disable it and BOOM! No pops and clicks. This is where the issue lies, now, to find a resolution. For now, I'll replace it with another reverb DSP.

ok the problem occurs with whatever i connect to FXMix2's out_l1 and out_r1 busses. the APS reverb was actually WORSE, perhaps because it provides more reveb effect.

however, if I cinnect out_l1 to FX1_nw and FX1_sL and out_r1 to FX1_ne and FX1_sR (on the xrouting DSP) i dont get ANYTHING, no pops, nothing, so I don't think it's the bus giving the issue, or i'd hear the clicks at lleast

I'll post more, probably in a minute or so.

or i'll test it with another (non-reverb) DSP before i post, which i did

I plugged TubeSound in there and, well ,the rusilt was the same, nothing at all. no pops, no clicks. nothing. the BUS is NOT the problem. Perhaps it's some similar coding in the reverb DSPs that i've used that my model of card doesn't like? I don't know, but connecting FX bus 1 directly to the router or plugging a non-reverb plugin inline with it seems to produce desireable results (with the exception of now having no reverb DSP)

something for the devs to chew on, eh?
