My current setup is Win XP Home, new AMD Sempron 2500+, new MSI KM4M-V Motherboard, new 1Gb Corsair ram (passes boot sequence diagnostic tests OK), used but correctly working SB Live with kX project ASIO driver. new 2x80 Gb UDMA IDE Hard drives.
All hardware/software works great. After sitting idle for some time, I went to go use Cubase and my VST instruments were outputting crap (for lack of a better explanation), Latency on my ASIO was set to 5.33 milliseconds and up to that point could support all VSTis in the rack with no clicks or pops. I also noticed at this point that my Line In no longer was no longer routing signals to Cubase. Wiring in a "Peak" in the kX DSP to AC97 in was also not showing anything with obvious line in from my Behringer MX802a mixer's "tape out" (my standard setup). I tried switching off all VSTis in the rack and then switching them back on again, also issuing a reset through one of the menubar menus. Went into my kXasio driver's control panels for the DSP and tried clearing and reinitializing the DSP. Only resolution was to uninstall the kX drivers, reboot and let Win PnP detect and install the native Creative drivers for the SB Live, reboot again and then reinstall the kXasio driver package. After that all things began working normally. Maybe I have a bad soundcard, but the fact that I reinstalled the driver and it began working again tells me that perhaps the driver crashed unrecoverably. Does this happen with latency settings which are too low? I didn't think to try a reboot first before un/re-installing the driver so it could have been either/or the reinstall or the reboots involved in that. I doubt a hardware failure. BTW, I am using the latest build of the kX Project driver (5.10.0.3537) Anybody experienced this sort of thing with this soundcard/driver combo or any other? |

Always try a reboot (preferrably a cold boot) before resorting to a reinstall.
Did you computer go to sleep during that idle time? Personally I do not use the power management stuff (because of performance issues, i.e. hard drive powering down while I am using the system is very annoying), so I am not sure what type of issues it may have with kX (and I do not have Cubase, so I am not sure how it might effect that either), but I would try disabling those settings in the Bios and Windows (i.e. system going into stand-by mode, etc), and see how that works. |

After this machine was built (Last Wednesday) XP Home installed, I went through a checklist of stuff to disable which I got from one of the Steinberg or Cubase forums - it's a complete checklist of things which are unnecessary on a dedicated DAW system. One of them was power management. Only after that did I install Cubase SE and Studiocase strictly according to the directions supplied by Steinberg. My system does not sleep

Has this happened more than once?
Does it only happen when Cubase is left open? |
