Wtt: 9800gtx+

A little over two years ago I won a 9800GTX+ on HH.

More recently, I won an HD6850, and when I get home in a few days the 6850 will take up permanent residence in my main PC, and the 9800 will be relegated to my cupboard.

That is, of course, unless anyone on here has a use for it. I will have removed the cooler, so what you'd be getting is a fully working 9800GTX+ PCB with VRAM heatsinks, but without VRM or GPU cooling. You'd have to fit that yourself, and I can advise on doing so if desired.

The card is in perfect condition. It does make a slight squeaking noise under heavy load, but it's incredibly quiet - you'd only ever hear this if you put your head right up against the back of your (silently cooled) case. If that still bothers you, there are fixes for this issue that I can link you to.

Oh, and if "9800GTX+" sounds to old school for you, it can of course be bios flashed to a GTS250 :P

This is still a very good card (all recent games at max settings with AA at 1440*900, L4D2 maxed out with AA at 2048*1152) and I'd love it to go to a good home. However, I haven't the cheek to charge for it. I'd like to swap it for someone else's unwanted piece of hardware that's of use to me. Items that'd especially interest me include HDDs (IDE or SATA), branded but obsolete ATX PSUs and Windows 7 capable AGP video cards.

If nobody's interested, no worries, I'll put it away as a spare

UPDATE: I do now also have a Geilid Icy Vision lying around that will fit this card, but it's a very expensive cooler, so the trade would have to be suitably desirable.

On a related note, flashing the BIOS to a GTS 250 - what sort of differences would you get from that?
I may be interested in a trade as my other half's graphics card is a tad under-powered in my opinion but she really doesn't need a butch one.

None, other than you feel less out of date :P

The GTS250 is identical in its clock speeds, but generally comes with more VRAM. So flashing my card to a 512MB GTS250 would have no impact on anything

What's your other half using atm?

Well, if you want it and have something to trade, it's essentially yours for the price of the cooler that you'd need to buy for it (perhaps buy a burnt out reference card on Ebay if you want to do this on the cheap?).

Do check that her PSU and case are compatible, though - 175W peak power use and 10.5" PCB iirc.

No hurry either way.

I found it - an 8600GT, not that it makes much difference.
The PSU is a Coolermaster 600W Gold so that should suffice. As for the case, it can fit 9.5" with the hard drive cage. I can either remove it or give her a difference case so no worries there.
The hard part is finding something that I have that you'd want...

What did you do with the previous cooling solution if you don't mind my asking?

I still have the watercooling setup around, but it's in pieces, and the thermal "pads" for the VRAM and VRMs were of the use once only kind.

If you're willing to run the VRMs passive, and willing to saw up a large piece of aluminium, it could be adapted for use just as cooling for the GPU itself.

I can take some photos to show you what I mean when I get home on Thursday, if that's useful.

There are some very tempting items there (most notably the HDD).

I'll take some pics on Thursday and try to explain how I think you could rig up a ghetto cooling system with the parts that are left (I take it that you are the proud owner of a jig saw or hacksaw) :P

If you don't fancy such measures, I imagine that you could pick up a compatible cooler cheap-ish on Ebay, whether it be through buying it seperately or buying a broken reference card that uses the same PCB. I would warn that any fan that you run off the onboard fan controller will run at 100% all the time, as that controller was disabled by Zotac, who didn't want their pump stalling at low voltages. You can get around that with a £2 fan controller, though.

I know I should've avoided temptation but I couldn't; I've got two GTX 280s on the way now (sorry). It really was a killer deal and that graphics power is really butch to beat (around about the level of a couple of 480s if I'm not mistaken)

I can't imagine shipping to the US for something as large as a GPU being particularly affordable or fast. If you ever fancy a holiday in the UK and have a little spare in your baggage allowance though... :P

When I shopped around for an upgrade from a 295 (took me a while) I established that two 460s in SLI weren't that much higher in performance. 480s might've been pushing it but I wouldn't think it far off.

Yeah, the GTX285 and GTX460 were pretty similar performance wise. The 480 has quite a big margin on the 460 though.
