Good low end ATI card???
That's my question, I'm not too familiar w/ low-end ATI cards, but I am needing a low-end card for a system I'm building up and I don't really know what to get. I'm limited to around 50 bucks, so it's more for good 2-D image quality and features, rather than gaming performance.
At NewEgg they have some 9200se's with DVI out and TV out for around 50 bucks, they look pretty weak, and are pretty slow, but it looks like they can go dual monitor if needed (or can they?), and TV out is cool. Plus if 2-D quality is anything like my 9700p I think I will be happy with it for the people that are going to use it... Are the older cards like the 8500's any better/worse or is it better to go with the newer stuff? And if anyone out there has a used low-end card that has TV and DVI out, I'll probably be able to take it off your hands.

I would go with the 9200 SE. Pretty cheap for a 128 MB card, you could always overclock it.

I got a 9000pro as a temp card once.... Man, I couldn't play anything at 1024x768. It was horrible. BWX pick up a used 8500. It performs a little less than a Ti4200.. Although, you could always just get a 4200. Really cheap and perform GREAT.

Will an 8500 do dual screen and TV out? If it does then I should have tried to get one of those, but I didn't have time, so I just bought a bran new 9200SE from NewEgg- (50 bucks) I think it will give good 2-D IQ and performance.. That's what matters. I got this this one because of the connectors that it came with- didn't want to spend an extra 6 or 8 bucks on a DVI to RGB converter or the extra converter for the TV out- This one came with those.
They won't be gaming with it anyway- but I do think they have an extra 15 inch monitor they might hook up to it for a dual monitor setup. If they ever want to start playing games on it, then maybe I'll look for a used 8500 for them. Remember, it's a KT133 w/ Socket A Athlon 750 and PC133 ram (512mb)- so it's just going to be a good email and web surfing machine. So if they want to game at all they will need a Mobo/CPU/Mem upgrade too.. They have 4 kids- so playing games on a PC isn't a very high priority.. but they will have a nice general purpose PC..

in my girl friends rig i have an old ati 64mb ddr vivo card (7200 based), It plays ut2004 etc just fine and dandy. With it's two pixel pipes and it super high stock clock speed of 183/366 the 9200 should be alot better

In my mom's PC I put my old geforce2GTS which I think runs the same core and mem speed- Put that's a 128bit mem interface card and the 9200SE is a 64bit interface card.. The GTS has about 5.3 GB/s bandwidth- and the 9200SE only has 2.7gb/s. The 9200SE has much more advanced core though- But in raw speed it pretty slow- So in general it's a very slow card, but hey, for 50 bucks it's a nice little card that will do the job, plus it's an ATI, so it's efficient and has good 2-D IQ with dual mon. and TV out. That goes a long way. I could have gotten the 128bit 9200 for not too much more- but hey, it's expensive to raise 4 kids. http://www.hwhunpage.hu/gvt_e.htm

I recently installed a 9200SE (sapphire) in someones rig(PIII-667),
was suprised what games the card would run, very decent Card for a mere 50 euro!! Downloader: No.. MX440 is a "forced up" GF2 GTS, hence the forceware drivers

Hey cool, It sounds like that little card isn't TOO much of a slouch then..
I just got all the stuff from newegg today, I got the case: I got the LiteOn 52 x 32 x 52 CDRW I got the little 9200se: I got the WD 40gig 7200rpm ATA100 HD and a little black floppy drive. I think I'm gonna throw in a little round blue cold cathode light to light up the inside a little too.
