As the title says, is it true that Nvidia intentionally hamstring their older graphics cards in order to make people buy their newer ones through the release of new drivers?

I personally believe this to be so. I have owned a few Nvidia cards before, and they seemed to be under performing heavily just two or three years after I bought them.

That is the main reason why I switched to AMD and I have to say, not only (until Vega) are they great bang for buck, they also last for eons.
