I have not actually been considering any upgrades for awhile. But, my younger son is needing desperately to upgrade his own GPU.

I have the R9 390 and am enjoying it quite well. It plays everything I throw at it these days.

My son is considering the RX 580, but, is hesitant about the current price. He's already purchased a new PSU to take care of any upgrade he does get.

I'm considering offering him my R9 for $175.00 and getting the RX 580 for my own use. I can currently get it for $270 after a $20 rebate.

But, is that actually a good option for the both of us?

    Thoughts?

You'd be better off getting a GTX 1060 over an RX 580, the R9 390 is still more powerful than the RX 580.

Not going "green" here...at least not in the foreseeable future.

Yeah I feel the same way, if money is not a factor then why not go for Vega 64? And then carry that over to a new build later? Or Vega 56.

The RX580 only beats the R9 390 in performance per watt and noise and heat levels. Otherwise you'd be better off just keeping the R9 390 until you want to do a full upgrade.

It may only be one user, but, from what I've read elsewhere, it seems that AMD has dropped the ball on certain kinds of support for the VEGA series. Not sure if that would impact my use or not, though. And, emphasizing, it may be just ONE user complaining.

Well, the AMD Vega cards are still new, and due to their price I saw an article the other day stating that even AMD's AIBs can not afford to release reference cards for the Vega series with the prices as they are now. And we all know how newer technologies which the Vega series has a lot of, run into some issues in their infancy. My take on things is that things will only get better.

But I fully understand your fear of being an early adopter.

If the RX580 is significantly quieter, that would be enough reason for me to get it.

Also it would be nice to have cooler case temps.

come again... what are you smoking?

The RX 580 edges out the 1060 and is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper in many instances.

I've 2x 580's.. actually got 3 of them.. but the damn backplates are to large preventing me from installing them one after the other....

Both the 580 and 1060 6gb perform on par... with more recently a lot of the edge in 580's favor. The 570's are the best bang for the buck with it tangoing with the 1060 3gb...

I recently picked up the 3x 580's for nearly a full $100 cheaper than the entry level 1060 3gb.

As for the Vega series.... AMD's Vega 56 performs better than the 1070 on average and the 64 runs as well as the 1080 if not better, some special circumstances have it up as good as the 1080ti... HOWEVER personally both of these products are not worth it even though they sell for less than their direct competition or around the same price.

What's currently understood, is that the Vega 10 series gpus (56/64's) are arguably a flawed early release.. they are hot and heavy and power demanding while not performing nearly as well as they should, most of which can be pointed at being due to a number of vega fundamental features are not working, basically all current 56/64 vegas and frontiers are mostly GPU computer pieces, that's where they excel, their graphics prowess is sad.

AMD recently released the Vega APUs however, these things are beasty buggers, powerful, fast as hell and sip less than what intel can do while greatly outperforming intel and even matching nvidia's discrete gpu. I look forward to the full mobile launch, currently they are limited to the ultra thin light laptops. This vega gpu appears to have nearly all the vega functions working.

We are to see Vega 11 or 20 shortly, It's believed Vega 11 is the direct replacement to the Polaris RX 400/500 series lineup, and considering what we've seen from the APU, the replacement for polaris should make a big improvement in the power/performance range unlike the BIG vega 10 (56/64's).

Don't expect Vega 11 until early next year though, not unless amd is about to pull a magic rabbit out of it's hat and launch before christmas, so far the big mobile APU Vega+Ryzen solutions aren't arriving until january, so i'm going to bet march at the earliest for vega.

Until then, we're stuck with the RX 570/580's as IDEAL gpus for the next half a year at least, however they are great gpus.

All the 400/500 series amd gpus have 0db 0rpm fan operation while below 50*C (though some will hit 60*C before engaging the fans), so they are entirely silent and zero wear on fans. All 3rd party gpus (sapphire and so forth) run WELL below 70*C under load stock typically, some better than others, personally the RX 470/480 the MSI gaming X were the best, for the RX 570/580's the sapphire nitro+'s are the best (some exception apply). Currently both my 580's in crossfire peak at 65*C under full load, but typically average around 57-62*C at any given time while playing a range of gaming in very demanding titles. They are mostly inaudible during high loads.

Both my 580's use roughly 180watts under load, my rx 470 used only about 140watts. The nvidia 1060 6gb i had was 135watts give or take.

And as for the 390 vs 580.... while in several titles there is very little difference, in others there some BIG improvements. The other advantage, is that 4K functionally and HDR on the 400/500 models is wonderful right out of the box. Full HDMI 2.0b support.

He's playing CoD:WWII on the system and telling me that he occasionally is getting a green screen during gameplay? Could this be an ULPS issue?
But, he had ALSO told me his new monitor ... prior to this new GPU ... was giving him trouble getting the colors correct. It was too much orange color. So, I'm suspicious his new monitor is defective. He's using HDMI.
And, yes, I installed the latest drivers. :)

Considering the oddness with the display prior to the new card... i would BET it's the monitor and he needs to get that replaced ASAP.... there is a BOATLOAD of displays floating around that clearly haven't had proper QA control done OR are just bad duds. IF he can, he really should use display port wherever he can.

I would also suspect the monitor since it was exhibiting weirdness before hand, maybe try a different monitor first and see if you can narrow down the issue further.

@Dyre Straits I should also add that I've never trusted Powercolor when it comes to GPUs, I've only bought one in my life before, and it was DOA.

I'm thinking it's the cable that's at fault.

We'll see how it goes. He did tell me today that the problem seems to have gone away after the room he was in cooled down. ??? It's winter here, so, I'd hate to think what it might do in summer! Anyway, his rear case fan was locked up and I told him to get that replaced pronto.

Appreciate all the suggestions and input!
