Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD Review

The consumer PC audio market is an odd area within the industry. With CPUs and GPUs we have two major players who keep competition reasonably strong and in other areas there are a large number of major players ready to fight for market share. When buying memory or storage products for example there are a huge number of options out there.

Discrete consumer audio cards on the other hand is a segment of the industry which is very much dominated by Creative. There are others who dabble in the market, manufacturers such as Asus or Auzentech and over the past decade or so a few others have taken a shot but no-one has been successful in challenging Creative. Interestingly, to a certain extent, the same can be said about the integrated audio market where Realtek audio products are widely used over any other manufacturer.

We mentioned Auzentech above as a company who had gone out to challenge Creative in the discrete audio market and they initially did this through the use of C-Media based products, adding a high quality PCB design with top of the range components and upgradeable OP-amps. Auzentech then briefly flirted with X-FI based cards with the same benefits but have since announced another C-Media based product and interestingly this ties in with the launch of Creatives own take on a card with features such as upgradeable components, the X-Fi Titanium HD.

Today on our test bench we have the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD, the latest high end soundcard from Creative which sets out to be the best audio card available for consumers. Aimed at audiophiles and featuring top of the range components with specifications such as the best signal to noise ratio Creative has ever achieved we will find out if this is the must have sound card of the moment.
