Today we will take a look at NorthQ’s latest and greatest CPU cooler, the 3340WLA Extreme. There certainly isn’t a shortage of CPU coolers on the market today and they come in all shapes, sizes and prices. Nearly two years ago NorthQ released the 3310BL UFO which we reviewed and it was a good cooler at the time, a design which they continuously evolved (and enlarged) for two years in order to keep up with the growing demand for better CPU coolers.
The 3340WLA Extreme however is an entirely new design instead of an oversized version of the old 3310BL and today we will find out if it as capable as their past efforts.

Packaging and bundle
The 3340WLA is supplied in a small cardboard package which has a window over the cooler’s body. The design of the package is quite basic but there is a wealth of information around it concerning the cooler. Inside the cardboard box everything is separated and secured by a clear plastic wrapping.
Inside the packaging you will find a small but practical bundle, there is a retention bracket which is installed on a socket 775 motherboard (Socket AM2/AM2+ users will not need it as the cooler can be secured on the reference bracket), a leaflet with basic installation instructions, a fan speed controller with an integrated alarm function which is installed in an expansion slot at the rear of the case and a crystal clear 120mm fan. The fan has a maximum speed of 2000RPM, good airflow and noise characteristics and, according to NorthQ, a hydromatic bearing. We seriously doubt that the bearing of the fan is hydromatic (hydromatic stands for a constant speed rotational device which is hydraulically operated) since this is a typical DC fan, by the expected lifetime of the fan and its motor’s noise (or the lack of) we can estimate that this is a high quality sleeve bearing fan, or somehow based on a sleeve bearing motor.
