The CPUs that AMD are launching today are essentially aimed at consumers who are shopping on a budget, or those who want an energy efficient model. The Black Edition does however offer more flexibility than the other three.
With this in mind we attached a low end cooler to our processors which has similar specifications to the model AMD bundles with their CPUs. We then installed AMD overdrive and allowed it to find the maximum overclock of each model.
For this test we continued to use the Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P which should have no issues in providing the platform for each CPU to reach its potential.
For the X2 250, X3 705e and X4 905e this automatic configuration resulted in some impressive figures with the X4 rising by 281MHz and the X2 250 hitting an even more impressive 367MHz overclock. The Black Edition Phenom 2 X2 550 was the real stand out performer though with an exceptional overclock of 689MHz and all that by just clicking a few buttons and letting the machine configure itself.

In the first of our temperature tests we configured the processors for high performance mode, disabling the power saving features and the results below show the results when each CPU was idle and then at full load. We can see from this that even when the additional cores are fully loaded on the energy efficient CPUs they still provide excellent thermal performance when compared to the dual core models.
Following the high performance test we enabled features such as Cool N Quiet on the system to see how the idle temperatures were impacted by this. Once again the energy efficient CPUs excelled and offered great thermal performance. The temperatures on all of the CPUs are made even more impressive by the fact we were running a CPU cooler with specifications similar to the stock AMD model. Add a more advanced cooler to any of these processors and the results would be even better.
