The game is set in a redesigned rendition of Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. It follows Niko Bellic, a war veteran from an unspecified country in Eastern Europe, who comes to the United States in search of the American Dream, but quickly becomes entangled in a seedy underworld of gangs, crime, and corruption. Like other games in the series, GTA IV is composed of elements from driving games and third-person shooters, and features "open-world" gameplay that gives players more control over their playing experience. GTA IV is the first console game in the series to feature an online multiplayer mode, which contains fifteen game types.
Grand Theft Auto 4 has received a mixed reception since its release on the PC a while ago – mainly due to the fact it needs a Quad core CPU to get smooth frame rates. Thankfully the Q9400 in the Dell XPS 630 is more than up to the job of powering through the demands, however the system is let down by the memory available on the ATI 4850’s supplied.
With only 512 megabytes of onboard ram we are limited to a view distance of 23 at the highest resolution available – 1920×1440. Lowering the resolution allows us to increase the view distance however the game experience is ruined as the graphics become more pixelated and rough around the edges. The configuration we used in the image above delivers the best gaming experience quality we could coax from the system which is quite impressive as the frame rate rarely dropped below the sweet spot of 25fps and was often in the 30-35fps region.
