MKV Playback

In the world of High Definition entertainment on the PC there are currently two dominant formats, Blu-Ray and MKV. We covered the former on the last page but until this article there has been no need to cover MKV decoding in graphics card reviews as this has been handled by the CPU. In the last few weeks that has changed though as through the use of CUDA CoreCodec have been able to add MKV acceleration to CoreAVC when an Nvidia GPU is installed.

To get MKV acceleration up and running it is a very simple process, just install CoreAVC, enable CUDA acceleration in the codec options and then open the MKV in your player of choice such as Windows Media Player or VLC.

The graph above shows the CPU load when CUDA acceleration is enabled and it is clear that the reduction in use of the processor is impressive. Maximum CPU usage is cut in half by CUDA acceleration with even more impressive drops in CPU load on the average and minimum results.
