AMD Radeon HD 6990 Graphics Card Review
Total War: Shogun 2 – DirectX 11
Shogun 2 is released in a weeks’ time and is the second title this year which will take advantage of 5×1 portrait mode for AMD cards. Mixed in with this feature is an enhanced version of the Total War engine which uses DirectCompute for depth of field, contact hardening shadows (higher quality) and hardware tessellation.
Testing was performed at 1920×1080 with no anti-aliasing and maximum in game settings.
In our final gaming test we look at the Shogun 2 demo which allows us to play though a battle with a huge amount of units and some lovely environments. At 1920×1080 we see the 6990 perform well, a little above the 5970 with the GTX 580 performing particularly well. It would seem both manufacturers need a little time to optimise this game before release though as the SLI performance is below that of the single card.
In terms of 5760×1080 testing, we were able to get screenshots at that level however none of the configurations being tested today are capable of playing at that setting. We need a little driver optimisation and maybe an extra card to ensure good Surround/Eyefinity framerates.
Here are some examples of how the game looks at our tested settings.
