We start the performance section of this review with a look at some of the key system performance aspects of the G74Sx and in doing so will be comparing it to a few systems based on recent and last generation of mobile Intel technology, MSI’s GX660 which uses an i5-460M/5870 combo and the recently release XPS 15z containing a i5-2410M/GT 525M along with the M14x on i7 hardware.

Looking first at CPU performance we see that there are real advantages using a mobile i7 CPU over the i5 alternatives. Memory for the 2nd gen Core architecture shows significant improvements over the older architecture also.

For SATA speeds the mechanical based models are all around the 100mb/s mark with ASUS leading however it does fall behind the SSD based M14x. ASUS do offer an SSD option though and more than make up for the HD performance on USB 3.0 speed where they far exceed the other systems.
