It is clear when first unboxing the Kone XTD that Roccat clearly thought the [+] design was near perfect as there have been few external tweaks to this model. The branding is a little different but that is it, both top and bottom. The cable has changed a little, from rubber to braided but all of the other changes are internal. That is no bad thing because the soft touch coating feels great, the body is comfortable to hold and the lighting rather nice. The option to change weights will also be appreciated by some gamers.
The internal changes start with the buttons used, now we get Omron switches with more travel and a very satisfying click on action. The wheel has been refined too, now it has lower noise operation while still having tactile feedback and the sensor is of course the main change. We now have access to speeds up to 8200dpi which offers some extreme movement while still tracking very well.
Speaking of movement, a quick word on the Hiro pad. It was quite a surprise when opening it that this was a flexible, soft gaming surface. We expected a hard pad, its not but strangely it feels like one. There is enough resistance in the base rubber and top coating to feel very firm when on the desk and the glide is up there with the best we have used. Spill proof design is of course a bonus and the edges do seem a decent enough quality to last.
Back on the mouse we have a software suite which is near identical to the Kone[+] which will make the transition easier for those who are moving across. We get a great amount of configuration from the control panel and each section is well set out and intuative. If we had one issue it is that applying changes can take a little long but that is a minor concern.
In terms of value the Kone XTD is £10 more than the [+] and that to us is a very fair price. It sits at a similar level to other high end gaming mice such as the RAT 7 and Taipan too, so no issues there.
By taking the great body and features of the Kone[+] and enhancing the sensor, buttons and wheel Roccat have created an exceptional mouse in the Kone XTD.
