XFX Pro Series Power Supplies (650W, 750W and 850W) Review
As we noted earlier in the review this new range of PSUs from XFX is aimed providing a great balance of price and performance for the end user. This approach can often mean that corners are cut by manufacturers to meet the lower price point however this isn’t really an issue with XFX.
Looking first to the build quality we have a unit which shares the same chassis as the more expensive models which XFX offer. Inside this we find components which impress in a "value" power supply. From a quality fan to 105°C capacitors throughout XFX don’t skimp on parts. It was also interesting to see that the three units in the series all offer very similar connectors, the only difference being additional SATA plugs on the 850w.
One of the aspects which allows XFX to stick with high quality components is intelligent design decisions such as varying component ratings from model to model on the same base design. Larger design decisions also have an impact with a fully wired unit able to hit a lower price point than a modular version.
A few small tweaks could be made to the units, for example the 4+4 pin connector should offer a clip to hold both blocks together (making insertion easier in tight spaces) and the use of clear rather than white glue would be appreciated. We also felt the plastic end on the PSU lacked the same quality feel as the rest of the chassis.
Looking to performance we have three PSUs which offer very good results across all of our tests. Throughout out testing they met or exceeded our expectations and most importantly they were completely stable throughout, even when pushed beyond their rated output. While some may be disappointed to see the Bronze Certification attached to these units the comparison between these and older models shows that the Pro Series can still save a considerable amount of money over time, which brings us nicely to value.
The bundle provided by XFX is no frills. The required plug and screws are present, as is a single cable tie. Items such as case stickers, more ties and fancy cloth bags are omitted to minimise cost and there is nothing wrong with this. XFX instead add value in other ways such as a 5-year warranty and the ability to speak to support staff via live chat.
Three impressive power supplies which offer great performance and good build quality at a surprisingly low price point. For enthusiasts on a budget XFX’s Pro Series PSUs should be top of the shopping list.
