Recording FX from kx into M-Audio

Hi all,

This has been asked before but perhaps not like this. I have my audigy 2 SB0240 connected to my M-Audio 2496 by way of spdif. I have set up the DSP in kx to use the kx fx as hardware FX. I can hear the FX when I play a VST in Sonar 6, but the FX aren't recorded. When I mute the input from the audigy in the M-Audio, which is my Master, I don't hear the FX on the recorded track in Sonar. What have I missed in the DSP to allow the FX to be recorded? I only want to use KX as a hardware FX processor and for soundfonts since the M-Audio does not have Midi. I am using KX version 3538M. Thanks for any help you can give.

It is hard to say without knowing the DSP config you are using, nor what you are trying to record, but basically you have multiple paths that a signal can take in the DSP. One path may only go to the speakers, while another may go to ASIO or MME for recording, or both, etc. You need to make sure that the effects that you want recorded, are in the recording path.

If you post a screenshot of your DSP setup, and specify which effects you are trying to record, and what the audio source (in kX) is (i.e. Wave, MIDI, AC97, SPDIF_In, etc), I can give a more specific answer.

BTW: Which card is doing the recording?

Hi DK-1:

Long time no see. hehe

Say man, use a DSP with 1 ProFX SRC set to FX Bus 0/1, Use MX6 connect that src to MX6 channel 1, use k2lt and connect the MX6 Main outs to k2lt out 1 (which is analog front bye default), load ProFX ASIO and connect the MX6 RecL and right to ASIO 0 and 1 on ProFX ASIO.

Open the MX6 and enable the E and M on Channel 1.

Now, Load the DSP effect you want to use and connect the FX out to a different channel on the MX6 (let's use Channel 2 for example) and the effect in to Send1 on the MX6. Enable the E and M for channel 2 of the MX6, turn the channel 2 slider all the way up, and turn the send 1 slider of channel 2 all the way up, now if you want to record the effect, you have to enable the R button in channel 2.

Try that and see what happens?

Wow, thanks for the quick reply guys. Russ I would gladly post a screenshot of my DSP, except I don't know how to do that. As far as what I am recording: VST instruments inside Sonar 6. The M-Audio is doing the recording. I am almost certain that what I am recording is not in the recording path. Thats why when I mute spdif-in on the M-Audio card the FX are no longer heard. I am missing something in the DSP. The effects I want to record are reverb, chorus etc. Even if all I have in the DSP is a setup for using kx as a hardware effects device and soundfonts, that is all I need. I think I am close, but I'm leaving something out of the recording path. thomasabarnes: I'm at the kx forum daily, never left. Just haven't posted anything lately. KX is amazing and you guys are a great help. I will try what you suggested when I get home today. That may do it for me. I especially like the possibilty of adding the effects by channel, that would be great. If someone can tell me how to post a screenshot of my DSP I would be glad to do that.

Thanks again, you guys are a great help.

If your using the M-audio as your recording device - then I presume its what you hear is what you record - with exception of VST effects. (IE - there no comprehensive routing with Maudio - like KX offers ??)

If you can HEAR KX DSP effects, but they are NOT recorded - Im thinking you're also monitoring the Audigy (if you hear audigy effects BUT are NOT being recorded) in a parallel path/route ... Id look closer at your monitor routing.. (not just KX DSP - but everything - like an outbord mixer perhaps??)
How are you monitoring btw?
If you connect head phones to the audigy for monitoring - you need to make sure that the monitor route is the same as the recording rout as Russ indicated.

Or possibly - your not recording correctly in Sonar - make sure you record the FX returned from KX - in a new track - Its possible your simply pressing record on the VSTi track - and I doubt it records the send/return effects in sonar this way - But may depend on your routing.. ??

Also -

I have set up the DSP in kx to use the kx fx as hardware FX
More details on this are needed
IE HOW is it connected - is it ALL within Sonar?? -

1) Open KX DSP (make sure its the top most window and it is all exposed) - the press the 'Print Screen' Button on your PC keyboard... Mine is labled 'PrtScr'
2) Open MS Paint (Start > Run > mspaint.exe)
3) In MSPaint - EDIT > Paste
You should see the screen shot pic now
4) Save As.. - select the filename /path and choose JPG as the file type...
5) Now you need to 'host' this image somewhere so others can access it.. I use imageshack.com - but there are a ton of others too
- Once you sign up for this free hosting... simply upload the pic you made with mspaint - and it will indicate URL to that pic (http://imageshack.com/342637423/) - Just copy and paste that link into a message here.

A screen shot of mixer settings may be needed depends on the DSP config your using... ?? As well as your sonar tracks/buss routing. You made some rather generalized statements of your config many would jump in conclusion to - so maybe post more dteailed info / screen shots to help us understand your total configuration and not just the KX config - as its just part of your system as a whole.
