What is the bitdepht in the DSP ?

Hi,
i'm using a 10k2 based card ( EMU 1820 ) and i don't really know how is the bitdepth in.

if i play a 24bit file is it converted ?

and i've a second card that i use as an audio processor
ie : the signal come from the hardware inputs, is modified by the DSP and goes out , in this case is it 16 or 24 bit ? ( using profx and UFX but no HQ plugins )
thx

I do not know if anything is different with any EMU cards, and I do not if anything is different with Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Here is an old post from Max M.:

This is also true for DSP->I2S. Note that 16-bit reduction only takes place when doing PC->DSP->PC transfers. Most of other DSP (_K2_) I/O is 24-bit (with a few exceptions like AC97 and SPDIF In).
Recent kX versions added 24 bit ASIO support, but I think MME playback/recording is still 16 bit (not including WaveHQ stuff or Direct Recording (and I am not sure about Kernel Streaming)).

Re : What is the bitdepht in the DSP ?

the audio transport (DMA engine) was fixed to 16-bit sample precision at 48 kHz. So despite its 24-bit/96 kHz high-resolution DACs, the Audigy's DSP could only process 48 kHz/16 audio sources (EMU 10k2 wiki )

Re: What is the bitdepht in the DSP ?

24 bit ASIO uses 2 different busses for each sample.. i.e. You grab the lower 16 bits from one bus and upper 16 bits from the other (but due to SRC error corrupting 16th bit, it is currently limited to 24 bit).

Well, this is where the Wiki is totally incorrect (It's just common mistake to mix up DSP, Wave Playback engine, DMA engine and the Audio Controller (e.g. Emu10k1/Emu10k2) as the whole).
The DSP (even on Emu10k1/SBLive!) - is 32bit/48kHz.
The DMA-engine is 16/48 indeed. (So Emu native drivers and kX ASIO transfer a high resolution audio as double or quad streams per channel).

24 bit.

p.s. Speaking of wiki - that quote came out in context of the Audigy 1 model - where (indeed) anything was converted into 16/48 (despite the A1 was advertised as a 24/96 soundcard).

Re : What is the bitdepht in the DSP ?

so if the internal processing is 24 bit, overall the bitdetph quality is only depending of the MEDIA stream or AD/DA converter.
those cards are very powerfull

If you mean the DSP, as Max said, it is actually 32 bit (with 67 bit accumulator).
