Audigy 2 x Audigy x Live DSP resources
Hi,
I was wondering: if I upgrade my sblive to an audigy or an audigy 2, how much more dsp resources would I have? I mean, with the live, I can load 2 of Max's EQs and I have no more resources left to load up other effects. I can't load the 5.1 headphone effect even if I disable almost everything in the KX DSP window. The maximum memory/registers etc I can get show as: Instr: 512 GPRs: 256 Itram: 128 Xtram: 32 Itram size: 8192 Xtram size: 256 How much do you audigy 1 and 2 users get? Thanks!

So Audigy 1 offers roughly 2 times the DSP capacity of the sb live. Thanks Chocolla. What about Audigy 2? Anybody can check that?

xtram size: it is selectable via 'Setup Buffers...' dialog
the maximum size is the same for 10k1 & 10k2 audigy2 has -exactly- the same DSP as audigy1 there's, however, a special 'p16v' module -- read our site pages for details /Eugene |

Eugene, you mean that if I increase the size of xtram I can load as many effects as a Audigy user can? What about Instr, GPR etc? Right now audigy 2 is too expensive in Brazil (at least for me...) so I was wondering if an Audigy 1 (used) would have advantages over a regular sblive.

Well, I went ahead and tried increasing xtram size to maximum. I couldn't see any differences, so I suppose that I didn't understand what Eugene said. I can't load more effects because the sblive's run out of GPR registers, and those can't be increased as it seems. So, getting an Audigy 1 would really make me able to load more effects simultaneously right?

Daniel,
>>So, getting an Audigy 1 would really make me able to load more effects simultaneously right? Yes, but mainly because of more GPRs and Instructions. I.e. benefit is less on effects that use much itram and/or xtram like reverb, chorus etc. In your case you do fine with a ADG 1. And it has better sound then 'good old' SBlive. /LeMury |

xtramsize defines the amount of system memory used for external delay lines
that is, when you create an echo effect, it uses some xtram memory for storing audio data... in general, you can leave the default setting (256 Mb) btw, audigy2 oem might be a better solution since it supports 24/96 playback and recording (via external devices... there should be possibility to attach a generic livedrive with a special thunk...) /E/ |

Yep,.and it might be my imagination, but adg2 sounds even a tad better then adg1. Unfortunatly, according to Daniel, adg2 seems to be very expensive in Brazil. (Crazy world. Here in The Netherlands it's almost impossable to even get an adg1 anymore) Let us know how it turned out Daniel. /LeMury |

Here in Brazil Creative still sells brand new sblive's 5.1... Thanks for the tips guys. Yep, here in Brazil an Audigy 2 OEM, without taxes (i.e. black market) costs around US$140,00. Taxes add 20% but there are ways to save that... An Audigy 1 costs US$80,00. If I manage to get enough money to buy Audigy 2 I'd need to figure a way to be able to keep using my live drive IR. The Audigy 2 EX here costs US$300,00 so it's way too expensive. Maybe I'll wait a couple month to see if prices go a bit down and go straight to an Audigy 2 instead of and Audigy 1. But thanks for the explanations, now I got it all figured out!

Eugene, you said "there should be possibility to attach a generic livedrive with a special thunk...". In that case, the recording would be 16bit 48khz and not 24bit96khz right? Would that "special thunk" require advanced electronics knowledge or could be done by a mortal like me? The audigy 2 card alone would allow me to record only 1 stereo analog signal or it has some other input (so I could also sell my livedrive IR, thus making it possible for me to afford an audigy 2)?

I can get brand new Live 5.1 (OEM) and Audigy1 (OEM) in Croatia too.
Prices are around -20% compared to ones in Brazil.

no, it should be 24/48 or something like that ![]() >> mortal like me I don't know if anybody has ever tried such a connection ![]() so, my suggestion is based mainly on 'theory', not 'practice' the connection should not require any special electronics review the live/audigy1 (aud_ext) pin-out -- there's nothing special I doubt Creative has introduced anything extraordinary... there might be some 'key' pins, however (that might require to be shorten or smth. like that...) anyway, that's only 'theory' /Eugene |

Ok Eugene, I get it, but I though that the livedrive had a/d conversors in itself, so they would be stuck in 16/48. But if you say it I believe you. Anyway I was thinking more carefully and I realized that while it is cool to have more asio inputs (with the livedrive) I almost never use them simultaneously, as I work mainly with synth and can record them one by one. So I'm really inclined to sell my live+livedrive and get a simple oem audigy 2. This way I can have 24/96 recording and more dsp resources and have most my needs satisfied. Thanks for the info.

I heard that LiveDrive doesn't work on Audigy2. Am I missing something?

"it doesn't work" simply means "it has a different connector"
that's it the on-board codecs are usually 24 bit... and the 10kX chip truncates the inputs if necessary I'm unsure since I've never opened a LiveDrive (only AudigyDrive )/E |

Is there a way to check if they are 24bit or 16 bit in the livedrive. I wouldn't mind opening mine and taking a look if I knew what to search for :-)

just open it and write down all the codec models you have
then go to google.com and search the datasheets ![]() /E/ |

Stupid me, how didn't I think about that? Maybe that's because I'm a psychologist and not a computer tech hehehe I'll check it this weekend and post the results I find here. Thanks!

I just checked the chips inside my livedrive. You'll find the info here: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/showthre...995#post215995 Thanks!
