How to add effects for midi playback only?
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. How do you add effects for midi playback, so that the effect amount can be controlled from another program (a MIDI sequencer program like Cakewalk, etc).
i.e. With the Creative drivers, in the EAX Control Panel you can add an effect (i.e. Echo) and then on the midi tab, assign that effect to a controller number so that you can control the amount of the effect using a MIDI sequencer program (the effect is for all the midi channels, but the effect amount can be set individually for each channel, etc). How do you do this using the kX drivers? |

load a DSP effect, and then connect it in between fxbus 2/3 and the xrouter

Hi and thanks for the reply. I figured out that much, but doing that, I am not able to map the effect to a controller, so that I am able to control the amount of the effect from other programs. I tried using the kX Automation tool to map it to a controller but could not get it to work. Additionally, I did not see a way to map it to just a controller and not an individual MIDI channel (should be available on all MIDI channels), but either way, it was not controllable from a MIDI sequencer program.
The only way I could make it work (closer to what I wanted) is to connect it between FXMix2 and xrouting (i.e. replacing reverb or chorus). But I was still not able to map it to a controller of my choosing, I was however able to control it (although the range seemes more limited than it should be) in a MIDI sequencer program using the default contollers for reverb or chorus (cc 91/cc 93) depending on where it was connected to the mixer (The slider controls in the kX Mixer for reverb and chorus also effect the amount of the effect (even though it is no longer reverb or chorus, etc)). What I am looking for, is a way to connect it, such that it does not need the mixer at all, and a way to map it to the controller of my choosing, such that I can use and control the effect in addition to, but seperatley from the reverb and chorus effects. For example: Using default reverb and chorus. Add an additional effect (APS Fuzz for example), and to be able to control Reverb and Chorus on thier default contollers, and (again, using APS Fuzz for example) to be able to map the Edge parameter to cc 95 such that I can control it from a MIDI sequencer program (in addition to Reverb and Chorus) and I should be able to do this on all MIDI channels (i.e. kX Automation asks for a MIDI channel and a MIDI Controller, rather than just the Controller, so it seems that it would ony be controllable on that MIDI channel (although I cannot seem to get it to work (map it to a controller) in any fashion using the kX Automation tool such that it works). As another example (more simplistic): Rather than adding an additional effect, how would I go about changing Reverb (for example) to use cc 95 (to control reverb level) rather than cc 91 (with and/or without FXMix2)? I do not know much about the hardware side of things, so maybe some of this is a hardware limitation or the SB Live(?), but using the Creative Drivers I could assign 2 (max) effects to the MIDI controller of my choosing and thus be able to control these effect in a MIDI sequencer program using the controller I assigned to that effect (and again, it was not limited to any specific MIDI channel). I was hoping that by using the kX Drivers that I might be able to go beyond the 2 effect limitation and thus do something like what I stated in my first example above. If you do not remember how it worked with the Creative drivers, you can look at the picture linked here: http://atlas.csbnet.se/livecenter/pi..._eacontrol.gif (from the Live! Center website (here is the link for the full page where that picture appears (with a small descrition of how it works): http://atlas.csbnet.se/livecenter/showpage.php?id=15). It shows a picture of the midi tab, within the EAX Control. You will notice in the picture that Reverb and Chorus are mapped to thier default controllers (can be changed by clicking drop down box) and any additional effects are not mapped (due to the 2 effect limitation, i.e. if you assigned one of the other effects to a controller, reverb or chorus would then show not mapped). I would like to know how to (at least) do the same thing using the kX Drivers, and if possible, go beyond the 2 effect limitation. I understand the routing somewhat and know that I can (and how to) add multiple effects, etc, and change the settings for these effects in kX DSP, but can't seem to figure out how to map these effects to the a MIDI controller so that I can control them from a MIDI sequencer program (at least not in such a way such it has similair functionality as with Creative drivers). Sorry for the long post , but I just wanted to try and make it clear, as to what I am looking for. Again, the main thing here, is being able to control the effect from a MIDI sequencer program, and not just the ability to add additional effects. The reason for this is that it allows the effect to be used on each MIDI channel and have unique settings for each MIDI channel, and each MIDI song, so that you do not have to reconfigure the effects everytime (i.e. it is hard coded into the songs themseleves by settings the values for the MIDI controller that you wish to use, etc). The default reverb and chorus currently work like this (although, again, I cannot figure out how to assign them to a different controller number). Thanks, Russ |
