How to configure Line in
Hey
I tried to configure my Line In input, but I couldn't understand anything. I have an SB Live! 5.1 card running through 2 speakers, and I cannot get the Line In to work effectively. I am also unsure as to whether KX has a recording program installed, I don't think it has. What is a good one?? How do I configure KX to record from my amp?? Cheers. |

It is a little complicated to explain to a kX newbie, as you may not understand the explanation any more than you understood what you were doing when you tried to do it yourself. For this reason it is always recommeneded to read the available guides and play around with kX, to get at least some basic knowledge of how it works (the DSP window in particulair).
As for recording applications, kX does not come with any, but it does uses the standard Windows Multimedia Extensions (MME), and thus can be used with pretty much any recording software. Additionally, kX supports ASIO, and thus can be used with any software that supports ASIO. If yo do not have any such applications, you might want to take a look at Kristal Audio Engine, as is a free application that can be used for recording using MME or ASIO. To record from your amp using Line_In, your amp would need to have a line level output on it, and you would connect this to Line_In on your sound card. The easiest setup for recording is using LeMury's ProFX plugins. Your best bet for setting it up would be to follow one of the guides, as it is not easy to explain if you are not familair with the plugins (and the explanation would depend on whether you are using ASIO or MME for recording). |

See this guide to learn how to setup custom DSP setups: http://members.home.nl/nahutec/kxtutor/kxtutor.html
There is an example DSP setup at the bottom of the guide using ProFX plugins. If you are using ProFX pack v2.x, load an instance of the ADC ProFX plugin and connect it as in the guide. If youre using the default DSP setup, just open kX Mixer and select the AC97 page. In the dropdown menu select Line In. If you have a preamp for the Mic, connect your mic to it, then, conncet the output of the preamp to the Line In on the sound card. If you dont have a preamp, the signal of a mic connected to Line In can be low, so load an Instance of the Gain plugin to the DSP and insert it between the ADC/SRC and whereever the Line In source is connected. Edit: Sorry Russ, you were making your post as I was making mine.

It would be nice (as a newbie myself) to have seen more pictures of example DSP configurations with a short but concise exlanation of what its doing, and when you *may* need that type of configuration.
It *seems* and correct me if Im wrong, that 'normal' use of KX drivers (to realize the added benefit from using kx drivers that is) is making regular changes to DSP configurations. So, when I was reading 'its reccomended you learn to use the DSP editor' and interpiting as this 'optional' - IMHO, its more of a neccessity. Which is what makes using kx a bit complicated. Another part that *can* be confusing is the fact there is more than 1 version. A stable and a beta. Seems most are using the beta by now, as most are anxiously awaiting the final release. So, theres info floating around that may not be (locally) tagged as to what version of kx driver that post/info is pertaining to. Reading something, THEN finding out it only pertains to a different version that what I have, will definitly throw me off. I think when final version is released things will be smoother as then the docs can be compiled and only relevent info would be available. Am I babeling.. ?? *SMACK* |

The first is indeed recommended (at least for musicians it is), the latter obviously not. /LeMury Last edited by LeMury; Jul 2, 2005 at 06:42 AM. Reason: typos |

I was indeed referring to the DSP window.
Additionally, for what I need to accomplish - DANE is also more of a requirement than a recommendation. For instance I need to make a mixer that takes 16 inputs and has 4 (adjustable) FX sends & returns and 3 adjustable sends (or outs) w/o returns. More than I have time for right now (hint - anyone?). I do realize the REAL power of kx is in the dane editor. It simply twists my mind the possibilities. Which will ultimately motivate me to learn more. Theres part of me waiting for the final release before I dive in too deep. But then theres that urning to create that makes me keep looking at docs and these forums. Which is interupted by the notion that I need to convert ALL my previous projects audio files from 44Khx to 48Khz so I dont have to jack my settings to record and playback at different times. MD6 |

An MX8, or MX 10 or higher, on the other hand, I will really find very useful. I remember you made a comment that you may make such a plugin. And I remember making a comment that I would like a drum machine, too.

or 8 channel stereo? 4+3=7 sends per channel? Oefff that's gonna be a big one on dsp resources! Quote:
Anyway; Making dsp mixers is relative easy, so a good thing to start with. /LeMury |

The latter is what you are probably after right? Can not be done in DSP. Only soundfonts or VSTi. I'm working on the latter (VSti Acoustic DrumKit) with free samples. -As soon as I have some time I'll write mx8/mx10 stuff. /LeMury |
