About Contest's 10 Post Minimums

I will admit right away, that I came to DH because of their 9700 PRO contest.

With that out of the way, I'd just like to say that the minimum posts should be raised a few, maybe 20? or 30? Or how about 50? I just don't see it being fair game if somebody from out of nowhere with 11 posts wins....and to make it worse: you find that they joined ON the month of the contest. Maybe the contest should be be 20 post minimum and prior you be part of the DH Community for more than a month.

Just my views.

I already have a 9800 Pro, so you'll be pleased to hear I'm not greedy enough to post in that thread in an attempt to get another one.

ive answered similar questions before in the feedback section like here

Ill be honest. the 10 post count is to get people involved in the board initially and to hopefully see its a good site. like yourself no_style. I feel that if people see an initial 50 post count to enter it will put them off even coming here. I understand your thinking but I thought long and hard about it and the figures.

There is some spam also created with a 10 post count minimum, with higher - there would be even more. The staff are already working hard to keep it all running well.

Thanks for the input though.

Then people will be spamming to get 50 posts instead of 11.

The way I see it is that this is a very nice and entertaining as well as informing board. I think anyone who is just passing by will be smart enough to bookmark this page. The contests should be that you must be an active member for at least one month that would probably cut back on the spam and keep true board members. Just my input.

Forgot about the spam

I guess I forgot about the spam But at least the "at least one month of membership" idea is valid is it not?

its valid but you all seem to be missing the point entirely. why would people come to the site to join up to enter if they couldnt enter due to a 1 month rule in the first place. The whole idea of the competitions are to attract people here, so they have a look around in the first place and some will (and do) stay. this has been proved several times already.

ive debated this at least 10 times already in here, and im not doing it again, I appreciate the input and understand your concerns, but it will remain as it is.

thanks.

So it is to attract people.

And here I thought it was a contest for the members. My mistake I did not encounter your other discussions pertaining this matter.

it IS a contest for members, its also a contest for everyone who makes an attempt to be a part of this site. why should we exclude new members ? ive been to many a site with "newbies" treated unfairly. Even older members and moderators jumping in when a new member posts an answer or a statement saying they dont know sh*t cause they have 2 posts or are new to the site/forum. That isnt DH.

should we make the competitions, 1 month membership only? 2 month membership only? members only with 500 posts? 1000 posts? members who have star ratings, members with nice signatures?? there are so many permutations. and I quite like the one ive chosen.

We cover all bases. older members and those dedicated, get custom avatars, titles and can go on to get gold awards or even end up joining staff on rare occasions, but surely everyone is in agreement a community will only thrive with new people coming and new people joining up. new friends. new faces, new input.

I would have to say I started to frequent the boards because of the contest, who wouldn't, that is one kick-ass piece of hardware. I don't feel that I spam the boards, and only post when relevent, but I now try to check the site daily and I will definitely be coming back to these boards on a regular basis.

shai are you to say everything else you get from being a member here at DH isnt enough? Some people might take what you are are saying as that. I don't beleive there any other people really complaining about the way it is setup and what DH is giving away. This is the way it is as of now and more than likely in the future. In saying this I am not trying to say we are closed minded but we try very hard to please all and anyone that we can. Sometimes though a few wont like the way things are setup but in the long run hopefully that individual will see that we are only looking to do the best for all here. Remember this site is free to join, participate, learn, laugh, make freinds, and hopefully have fun with. Having 0.00000000001 of a chance is better than none.

No-one has said that your opinion wasn't allowed as everyones opinion is important to having a sucessful forum such as DH. Infact, by giving you the ability to post comments we are giving you the ability to express your opinion.

However, that doesn't mean that everyone is going to agree with you just because you think so.

That out of the way lets address your previous comment.

Quote:

We have 30624 members as of now.
100 / 30624 = 0.0032% (to 4 decimal places)

So you've got a 0.0032% chance of winning if everyone enters. Slightly better odds than your estimate.

The odds also improve slightly more when you take into account real world numbers. There's currently 632 entries in the current competition. Remove say 32 posts (admin/moderation + spammers) and that gives 600.
100 / 600 = 0.1666% chance of winning - even better

But what you're basically saying that as your odds are so poor, you'll never win. As you'll never win, you won't play and whine about it.

Alternatively, suggest a better compeition mechanism that makes everyone happy and we'll look into it as we take all feedback seriously.

i did i suggested some of the contests should be meant to draw people like this one
and some should have a 1-2 month limit and/or 50-100 posts limit to make it fair
then everyone gains

well I have been here longer than a month and I still don't have ten posts, and more than likely I'll not get there in time anyway, so all those who think it's unfair really have missed the point.
The main reason you should join anyway is for the direct benefit of the information and deals, if the competition brings forth new knowledge and new deals then that we ought to support.

nice to see we have some members like yourself on the site. certainly proves to me we SHOULDNT exclude members with a low post count. id rather have someone post 20 high quality posts, than 200 nonsense posts.

have you actually READ anything I have posted in this thread or the others??, more importantly do you ever READ anything I post Shai?? I have stated why this is the way it is, and no one has yet even made any kind of worthwhile alternative.

just because it works for you or in fact for sidebar doesnt mean it will work for the thousands of other people who have just came here. thats my WHOLE point.

this thread is going on for too long and is now going backwards ..... and its about the 10th of this kind ive had to keep replying to.

at this point the competition rules stand, perhaps they might change in the future competitions, but they certainly wont with feedback and comments like this.
