Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
up until i saw this thread i had begun to notice my computer slowing down some. then i read this thread, and you have what i posted in my initial post for this thread.
my comment now is, when i have several tabs open for different threads for me to view, and there is that BFG ad there for at least half of the open threads i have in each tab, that really slows my computer down. it's been making my DH experience less enjoyable. |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
bring back this thread again, i've noticed that the new BFG "H20" ad also causes CPU usage to skyrocket. this is true on my machine at home and at work.
can these ads that increase CPU usage be removed? |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
yeah the H2O add does add to CPU usage, but it's got a really cool mouse-over effect, but it doesn't slow down my computer much (Safari 4 Beta, Macbook Air)

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
the add Judas was referring to loads both of my cores 25% to about 50%, depending if there are two or only one of them... i'm using Firefox 3.0.5 on Win Server 2003...

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
Yes I am sure it depends on cpu cores it never exceeded 50 ( between 30 - 50) for mine (2 cores) May be for single core system it would achieve 100 %..

It does...... sometimes reloading the page and hoping for a different ad is the only way to do anything.... the H2O ad doesn't do it anywhere near as bad.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
quite often on single core cpus.. even my 3.2ghz Pentium 4 with 3gb of ram and xp pro sp3 will cause IE to pretty much stop responding for 5-10 seconds at a time... and occasionally lock it right up to the point where i have to force it to shut down via task manager (if i can get the bloody thing to load up cause the cpu is pegged so hard)
The other machine, a Sempron 64bit 3100+ cpu...... also experiences the same thing, however while running vista or win7, it manages it a bit easier then xp. Still the results vary.... I came to the site on a P2 450, the machine pretty much died right on the spot.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
I've got tons of different and older hardware that still works great with windows XP pro sp3....
shit the compaq with 72mb of ram and a 486dx4 running 90mhz (overclocked to 180mhz.. WOW) still works relatively well as a last ditch effort. (sp3 really slowed it down though)

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
there is nothing odd about it... i still own a PII and a PIII rig myslef... and they are still both in excelent condition... sometimes i need a slower rig so i could do some testing on some types of sotwares...
![]() back on topic: the other adds eat up both CPU cores to about 30% (max), but only if there are two of them, this one eats up 50% of both cores with two of the same adds present on the page... i also do what Tyrsonswood does... reload the page and hope that the next time a different add will show up...

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
I've passed on your comments to our sales guy who can contact the company rep who provided us with the adverts, it's out of our hands, as it seems to be the flash file itself rather than anything server side.
If you have any other issues with the adverts please let me know.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
cool, thx craig. but as judas pointed out, there's still that other problematic BFG ad which originally caused this thread to start.
i've even gone to using FF for DH specifically (i don't like to use FF btw) because it has the ability to remove ads....but i gotta figure that part out myself which would call for a different thread entirely. |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
I honestly think.. that majority of the problem is related to the latest version of Flash itself..
since flash 10 arrived.... i've seen a number of complaints from various forums about flash related issues such as lockups and high usage.... i personally find flash 10 since it came out.... to be a royally pain in the ass reguardless of the machine it's on.... random sites just failing... it's the worse version of flash since it's orginal inception

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
Z, I think the BFG "fast and furious" seems to be the culprit for most of these posts. I started using chrome last week and I'm not seeing it as bad there, but with IE or firefox it was just miserable when Two of those ads happened at the same time..... None of the other ads were anywhere near as hardware intensive on my systems

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
as i mentioned.... the ads are still pretty intollerable on any system running a single core cpu even if it's hyper threaded. Some of these machines with mp3 playing or any sound playing at all will cause it to even clip on dh, typing a new post on such a machine is extremely slow, takes a second for every letter typed sometimes.
it's very unforgiving.... i'm not a E5200 right now.... no problems.. but just confirming this on the machines that i are lower end dual core or mostly single core cpu's. Course what i find interesting is that this 3.2ghz p4 with HT dies where as the AMD Sempron 2800+ does exceptionally well under the exact same circumstances.

anyway, if the porblem is the new version of the flash player, why are not all ads problematic... why is only the BFG ad the one that stands out...?

those of us who don't have ubber fast computers suffer with these CPU intensive ads. my personal machine at home (3.2Ghz 800Mhz FSB p4 as stated in my specs), and my work machine (2.66 533Mhz FSB p4) come to a CRAWL with these ads. what i had to do, at work at least because it's worse in my work PC, is use FF (which i don't like using) and use the ABP ad-on to not show any of the ads that DH gets. can't DH go use only *.gif or *.jpg style ads? ads don't need to be flashy and/or "cool looking", ads just need to advertise a product/service. |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
Most of the ads are fine, even the "cool looking" ones....... but that BFG ad just pushes it to the max.......... It's not even that "flashy".

it has that "flashy" water effect if you scroll your mouse over it.

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
guys can everyone please relax a bit.
these flash ads are necessary to the running of the site and people need to understand that paying 20 people, covering the costs of 5tb+ of data month is a lot of money. If we went with 3 JPEG ads we would need to make quite a few people redundant, you wouldnt get half the competitions or half the content. The BFG ads have always been an issue and one has been removed. I will flag the other BFG ads to the relevant parties. I don't always like the ads myself but you have to understand that these ads help fund everything you get for FREE. if the ads are such a massive issue then all I can suggest is that you block them. |

Re: The ad that causes 100% cpu usage
just a fyi... i'm not complaining.. just pointing them out... mostly for those trying to figure out why their machines may crawl at times.. there are quick solutions available for the individual cases... i don't think they need to be removed.
i'm fully aware of the necessities of the ads.... they should remain..... just each user needs to be aware of it, and take the extra steps if they can for themselves. Flash is here and going to stay..... i just wished that full hardware acceleration 2d/3D wise without taxing the CPU would be nice.
